What Things are OFF-LIMITS on a Registry?

Pumpkin, on June 22, 2010 at 8:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 64

I thought this might be a fun topic: In your opinion, what things are completely off-limits for a wedding registry? If you were invited to a wedding and saw _blank_ on their registry, what would upset/anger/annoy/freak you out the most?

I'm going to say sex toys and cars. I went to a wedding last year where they had registered for a $1500 TV and I was a little disgusted, I have to admit. We are considering registering for a platform bed ($150) and a kitchen table set ($200), but I don't want to look greedy. I'm hoping gifts like that will give people the hint that we need cash to put toward those items. I'll probably leave them off altogether for fear of looking greedy.

Personally? Nothing would upset or freak me out. But then I could really care less about etiquette where a registry is concerned. If there's nothing on it I can afford, I'll just give them cash.

We made three registries: Target, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Sears. One has cheaper stuff, one has nicer items, and one has the most ridiculous things we could find. Such as an 84 inch flat screen, a portable hibachi grill, and seven bicycles. lmao. Someone will probably take it seriously and get all pissy, but I really don't care. We just want cash so we figured if we loaded our registries with crazy stuff, no one would buy it. haha.

Don't worry about looking greedy, we've got a TV ($140) on ours. @Evl I've only got one kitty baby but he runs our house lol

I second the no sex toy rule! Naughty lingerie would freak me out too. Kinda peeved me when my cousin asked for a 2000.00 riding lawn mower! Seriously? His yard isn't even that big and 2 grand?!? He also had a kayak on there but I can't remember the price. Although I am putting a grille on mine for 200.00 and my BP hates the idea.

I say put those items on Pumpkin. Maybe a family of four would go in on the table set?

The most expensive thing on ours is a dyson vacuum! We really want one of those haha. I think it's ok to have expensive things on your registry. Sometimes people are willing to go in together on a gift that's more expensive to give you something you really want than to just buy smaller things you might not want us much just b/c they're cheaper. As long as there's a wide range of prices I think it's all ok. I tried to keep our registry to things for "us" and not things that would just be for me, or things that would just be for him.

@Amy: That's what I'm hoping. haha We could really use a dining table. Of course, that would really come in handy as we're trying to put invitations together, but whatever. lol

My first thought was a vibrator, good thing I'm not the only one lol. I'd say... um... I guess random personal items. Tampons, razors, deodorant. Not that I've ever seen those on a registry, but if I did, I would definitely find it odd lol.

My kitty could totally use a condo!!!!! hmmm, no you've got me thinking EvlKittyKali, lol. We (I) requested a $500 dyson animal vacuum. I think that's the priciest gift. FS would love to put a tv on there but the ones he wants are a couple thousand dollars.

I found the kitty condo and a great new bed for my feline at Target. The condo for our fluffy little king was actually FH's idea, he's such a softie.

I guess my biggest thing is registering for really expensive things... especially with the current economic situation. Like, I'm sorry, registering for a $100 water pitcher is ABSURD. I would be INSULTED as a guest logging onto a registry to see that. Honestly, I think that unless all of your guests are rich, you should only have like 5 things over $100 on your registry. Everything else should be under.

I have no qualms registering for more expensive items because I'm sure some of my friends or extended family will go in on gifts together. I agree that as long as there is a good range of prices, I could care less what they are (though super awkward for FFIL to log on and see a vibrator).

How do you feel about honeymoon registries? http://www.honeymoonwishes.com/Honeymoon-Registry-53185-Greece-Santorini-Emily-Hurd-Matt-Davison.html is an example of one that breaks things up into small (as little as $20) chunks, and still gets the couple something they need?

I was thinking of Honeyfund, which doesn't charge a service fee, but they cut a check to the couple, so technically, the couple COULD use the money for anything, so the guests are really just giving cash, which some might find tacky.

Oh and I almost forgot...to go along with previous post.. having HUGE registries for small (less than 100 ppl) weddings is a no. Of course this combined with the expensive items is a little much. It's nice to have a variety of things to choose from, but having your guests log onto your registry of like... 200 items when there are a MAX of 100 guests (and of course, not every single person will be buying you something... usually its at least 2 people to a gift). It just looks like you are expecting too much from your guests. I saw this before (girl had about 70 guests, and 2 registries, each had at least 80 items on each) and at least 40% of the items were over $70 (20% over 200). It was RIDICULOUS. I would have been SOO pissed if I was invited (said her budget didn't allow which was fine, but it was funny that she expected a $500 pot and pan set from people)

I was pretty offended to see bicycles and a tv on a registry once, but the couple were really young - just starting out - and had never lived on their own. I was like "You guys really don't think you need other things first?!" Especially since the bride griped about how much her wedding was costing ($3k punch and cake reception), and then sent out a MASS FACEBOOK MESSAGE as a thank you. Over half of the message was spent apologizing for not at least writing us individual messages, but (you guessed it) postage was too expensive. I get it, not everyone has the money, and money was tight for them, but at least call everyone and thank them personally, ya know? And I have no problem with people registering for bigger ticket items if they've been on their own for a while - everyone needs upgrades!

We have a few things that are expected....like the 200 dollar weedwacker. His step-mother works at Lowes and could get it very cheap if she chooses to get us that. We already know she is going to get us something from there so we might as well give a hint lol. Everything else we have is pretty much under 50. I figure people could peice some of the really inexpensive stuff together if they really wanted to. We really only registered for like I dunno 13 things?
