What Things are OFF-LIMITS on a Registry?

I thought this might be a fun topic: In your opinion, what things are completely off-limits for a wedding registry? If you were invited to a wedding and saw _blank_ on their registry, what would upset/anger/annoy/freak you out the most?

I think the cost issue varies, depending on your social circle and the cost of living in the area you're located. Wedding gifts around here are routinely $100/couple -- usually $200 or more if you're considered to be good friends. Expensive things wouldn't bother me so much; I think I would find it MORE annoying if people registered for silly little things. I don't want a registry of boring things to choose from, like $5 tea towels, shampoo, or water bottles. Surely people can buy those things for themselves; they're not really wedding gift material! A cat condo would be perfect though...I'd be happy to give that and even happier to receive it! We foster cats/kittens for a rescue organization, so it would be very us. Smiley smile

Things to be used in the bedroom would freak me out. I did put higher end($110 and over)small kitchen appliances on mine. But I burnout 4 hand mixers and 2 standmixers before I got my kitchenaid. I do have tons of time before our wedding and we are using it as a guide to what we want in our home. So we might end up buying the stuff before anyone else does. I think my cheapest item is a dollar and has multiples and most expensive are vacuums and luggage which I don't have any of. MY vacuum died after a year.

My sister and future brother in law put bags of candy on their registry, I have a feeling it was more the brother in laws idea though and he snuck some clicks in to be silly.

I would say sexy toys, lingerie, condoms, etc. Other than that, I don't think that anything else would make me go "WHOA!?" If someone wanted to register for a bed or a piece of furniture or whatever, I'd support it. I wouldn't be able to get it for them but maybe someone would be able to!! My FH and I registered for a Dyson (which I want the most) and a nice set of pots and pans--but those are practical. I thought about registering for things for the animals as well, but I decided against it because I knew we would be judged. But, if you think about it, those are things that you need too. ::shrugs:: I'm thinking about adding laundry soap and cleaning supplies as well. Those are things you need but don't think to ask for!!

A family member registered for clothing - shorts, tops- I guess for the honeymoon. That's not the norm around here.

I agree with everyone else, personal items are taboo for registries. I also don't see the point in registering for more expensive items and would never buy someone their $1500 tv. I could see that if the store offers a discount for the couple up to a year after their wedding for items still on their registries- that would make sense to register for those items- especially if you can afford it yourself. I didn't register for anything I didn't intend on going back to buy myself if I didn't get it as a gift. Also rule of thumb when registering, if you have 100 guests you DO want to register for 200 items. You want to make sure you register for at least 2 times as many gift givers you expect to attend your bridal shower and wedding. It allows your guests to have an adequate amount of items to choose from when shopping for you. Smiley smile

I only have a wal-mart & target registery with mostly things for the kitchen. I am not that big of a cook right now but I like to experiment and I learn that I don't have the things that should really be essential, like measuring spoons. I don't have any so I guess with a regular spoon and our silverware are handmedowns from him mom and they are soup spoons and huge azz forks haha. So I put a really nice silverware set on my registery @ both. Neither are over $30 so its not too bad. I asked for a Vacuum on one which is $130 our highest selection. We need a kitchen table badly. I have a hand me down and after taxes we're remodelling both the kitchen and living room. So money is a good gesture too. I put that on my wedding website I think LOL. I don't remember.

I was invited to a wedding where the bride had 5 registries with literally hundreds of items on each including about 10 different types of wine glasses(for a bride that doesn't drink at all) and a $1700 bedroom set. She also had three bridal showers and expected her friends to show up at every single one with another gift. Of course, this is the same bride who told me she wanted to invite my fiance's parents because, "They could afford an expensive present." She had never met them!

I registered for a Kitchenaid mixer as a joke and it was my most expensive thing at 200 bucks and next was my Giada DeLaurenis pot/pan set from Target (150 ish) and my aunt actually bought me the mixer for my shower and my mom is getting me the pans for our gift. I about crapped. I only put a few high priced items on there because there are 2 groups of my college friends (8 in one group and 6 in the other) who chip in like 50 bucks each and get huge gifts or an arrangement or gifts. We also registered for new hand towel sets and stuff like that..just an arrangement of prices. My sister and mom actually have used the registry for shower and mothers day gifts for me haha not that I'm complaining! We clicked the zapper for a reason!

    So did I, Mary!!

I only think expensive items are a problem if that's all you register for. There needs to be a pretty wide price range. And I guess repeats are weird. FS and I really want a $1300 industrial margarita machine. We tried to figure out how to register for it in pieces, since it's obvious that no one will buy it on their own. We couldn't figure out how to do it without looking ridiculous, so we just started a fund. But it's the only thing that we REALLY want!

Mary now I want to register for a Margarita Maker too! I don't know that I would be offended by what other people put on their registries...I mean maybe if they asked for a porsche or any care for that matter...For me I feel bad registering for anything over $100 at all. Even the dishes I have on my registry right now are like $80 for the whole set. People say I can register for more but I just feel guiltyu registering for a 4 piece place setting that costs $70. But again, that's just me. I did register for a kitchen aid which I think is about $250, but my parents will probably get that for me for christmas or something. I have wanted one for 4 years now. I think it is just different strokes for different folks. I have friends who registered for wine glasses that cost $40 for 4 and champaigne flutes that were $300 for the pair [gorgeous swarovski crystal] but I could not do that, because we are just different. I think people put too much effort into judging other people. cont...

If you are on the registry looking for a gift to buy just get what you can afford to give, or get an idea of their style and purchase something they would like elsewhere that you can afford.

But yeah...really excited about a margarita maker now! haha

I can't wait to create a registry. FS wishes they had a registry at Harley Davidson. They might but I told him NO. We are just going to add things that need replacing (microwave, coffee maker, utensils) but do the Honeyfund also as we have basically everything we need.

As long as it's items they need, not want. if you want a Wii, then buy one for yourself after the wedding with all the cash you get. it's weird to put something like that on a registry because that's not a housewares item, it's a bday gift type of item. and items over $200 shouldn't be on there either.
