what do you give for weddings? cash or gift?

RustyTheDog, on October 24, 2017 at 6:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 100

I'd like to get kind of a survey of what people give as presents for weddings: cash or a physical gift. I'm from the South, and I don't know whether it is just my region, but until WW I had never heard or thought of giving money for a wedding, only physical presents. If you post, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR LOCATION!! I want to know if it is semi-location dependent.

ETA: that moment when you realize that your personal experience was different from the majority of people on WW...... the majority opinion here seems cash/check/money! I would have never known!

In Wisconsin, most people give cash. A few people give gifts, but majority is cash

I'm from the South as well and always preferred to buy physical gifts from the registry. Now that I'm planning my own wedding, I'll always give money!

Since I didn't add my specific location: grew up in ATL, now live in Cincinnati, OH (which apparently has some different opinions).

Pennsylvania-we usually give physical gifts for the shower and cash for the actual wedding.

Actual wedding cash or check. Never seen a wedding with more than two or three physical gifts.

I live in Upstate New York. I can't speak for everyone from the area, but every wedding I've ever been to, the majority of people gave cash.

@FromAtoB, in my tradition we do not bring physical gifts to the wedding, they are mailed to the bride (or way old school the bride's parents) BEFORE the wedding. No one wants to handle gifts at the wedding. I already have gotten quite a few physical presents, no indication of anyone giving money as my mom considers it super rude (way ruder than dry weddings or dollar dances! haha)

Always cash. I'm in the UK though, but I will continue to do this after I move!

It depends on who's wedding. If it's someone I'm close to, gift (regardless if family or friend). If I'm not super close with them, they get cash (I hate checks because I always feel like I messed it up somewhere).

Chicago burbs (although I now live in Wisconsin) and I always do a gift for the shower and check for the wedding. I never do actual cash because I think a check is safer.

I live in Georgia and give cash. I'd think it would be an extra duty for someone to be responsible for taking gifts back home to the bride and groom.

At my wedding I noticed most of the midwestern and northeastern people gave cash. Everyone from the south gave an actual gift or GC. To me it felt very regional.
