Wedding on a holiday weekend?

Strlite2009, on August 20, 2015 at 6:56 PM Posted in Planning 0 59

Hey I was wondering is it selfish of me to have my wedding on a holiday weekend? I thought it would be a nice idea since everyone will most likely have off on Monday. It's also cheaper to have Sunday weddings.

Mine's over a holiday weekend (Columbus Day), although we're still having it on a Saturday. It just made it easier for people travel wise since we have majority OOT guests.

I would avoid hosting it over a holiday weekend where the holiday is a family event (thanksgiving, Christmas, etc), this can upset your guests.

We're having ours over Labor Day weekend and a lot more people are attending then we thought. A lot have said that they thought it was a great idea.

Well Easter weekend works well for us and all of our OOT guest such as family, because they'll be able to take more than just a Friday-Sunday. Plus the majority of our family will already be home for Easter weekend, which prevents them from having to travel for two different weekends in March.

Mine will be the same weekend as yours, just that Friday (:

I thought it would be nice because then my guests end up with a 4 day weekend!

If people are going to be in your town anyway, then it's a good idea. But if you have a lot of OOT guests who wouldn't necessarily be travelling to the wedding destination, I would caution against it as travel and accommodations are usually a lot more expensive during holiday weekends.

I would go for it, but don't be surprised if you get more declines than anticipated.

Also Sunday's aren't always cheaper when it's a holiday weekend. Plus be prepared for the possibility that some vendors might charge more. My MUA is doing one on Easter and she's charging them more due to that fact. So it's not always cheaper. It might be cheaper because it will be hard for people to make it especially if a lot of people are from OOT. I would reconsider.

Mine is over a holiday weekend... President's Day/Washington's birthday weekend (which also happens to be Valentine's Day weekend). However, mine is that Saturday.. so most guests still have Sunday and Monday free.

We saved around $50 per person, since our wedding was a Sunday night. We were able to host around 50 people more and we had a fantastic time.

It was the Sunday night of a 3-day summer, holiday weekend (USA). The venue's co-ordinator said to expect a 20% decline rate, for the average wedding, and 30%, if it was a holiday weekend. We had a 10% decline.

Many complain that the costs of traveling over a holiday weekend are higher. My relatives that had to fly probably wouldn't have attended, if they had to take a day off work.

If you have a lot of OOT guests who have to fly, don't do it because flights are more expensive. Also, be sure to do it on a night that is not the night before people go back to work. DH and I are going to a labor day wedding that is actually on Monday night, so we have to take Tuesday off to fly home.

Ours is this labour day weekend! Eeek! On a Sunday. Our reception goes right until 1 am. We got a lot of accepted rsvp's and only 1 family declined because it's the weekend before school starts and she lives in another province. No worries though! Fh rationalized the potential for decline as those who should be there will be there. Anyone who skips our wedding because it's labour day weekend probably shouldn't have been invited in the first place! Weans out the wieners! As for vendors charging more, not a single one did for us!

We had ours Labor Day (eons ago). At the time I thought we had more no-shows cause it was a holiday, but reading this site, I think it was about average. It is nice to have the extra day to travel, AND your anniversary will be on/near the holiday for the rest of your life!

Our wedding is right before Labor Day. We thought we might lose some guests bc of that, but we only had a handful of declines! People seem excited to spend the long weekend in the same place with their family/friends.

My wedding is the Saturday of Columbus Day weekend. Not everyone will have that Monday off. I don't know how many declines we will have since the wedding is 14 months away.
