wedding favour - tacky or not?

michelle, on August 22, 2012 at 10:26 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Hi all!

i need your opinion on something... so i'm having the hardest time to choose my wedding favours, and a friend of mine gave me a great idea (or so i thought) : why not give everyone a $1 scratch ticket? it gives people something to do, it's fun and a guest might actually win something!

the only thing is, my mother (and a couple other "grown-ups" - i'm 28 in case you're wondering) seem to think it's rather tacky... and they very well may be right... so i'm looking to all you other brides out there for your opinion!

keep in mind i have been to quite a few weddings over the past 5 years (over 20) and i've seen just about every possible kind of favour imaginable. i'm not necessarily trying to be "different", but i also don't want to offer something my guests don't want...

help?

I think thats a cute idea! I know other people have done that. Imagine if someone acutally wins something, that'll be an added bonus. I disagree with the nay sayers.

I've heard of a few other people doing this actually--and if I was a guest that got a scratch off ticket I would be pumped!

Very cool idea. Could you add candies, or something else to the bag too so the tickets aren't the only thing standing out by itself? : )

I think it's all in the packaging. If you google "lottery ticket favors" or "scratch ticket favors" or put those into the search bar to your right on WW, you'll see some cute ways to present them!

Honestly I think there are just people who are snobs about the lottery in general and scoff at it, and there are people who think it's fun. Whatever, I say go for it!

Hey, maybe somebody will win a prize. Smiley smile

Personally, as a guest, I would prefer that to a candle or knick-knack or something! And I think that Kris is right, its all about presentation.... make it look cute, and it'll be cute!

I also don't think it is tacky and I am a "grown-up". lolol I am a recent bride and a MOB whose daughter was just married. One of our recent brides did it. Mrs. O had a lovely presentation and even put in a coin to scratch it off. Her wedding was very elegant.

Here is a link to Mrs. O's. They were lovely.

I agree, it's fun! Present it well and it'll go over fine! I think older generations can be out of touch with how weddings are done these days. It's almost an anything-goes world!

    Shannah....."Older generation"....LMAO : )

Considering I have done two weddings in two years, and have been posting here since October 2010, I do believe I am on top of all things wedding. LMAO

Yup, we did scratch off lottery tickets for our favors. Our guests really enjoyed it.

We decided to do $2 scratch off Bingo cards. They actually required a bit of time to scratch them off and complete the 4 games on the cards. So not only did they give our guests a chance to win, but they also kept them busy for more than just 5 seconds of scratching. The kids at the wedding especially loved them (The parents were fine with them doing them). The big winner at our wedding was someone who won $20.

We packaged them in small jewelry boxes tied up with ribbon with a label that said "Wishing you riches from the new Mr. and Mrs." We also included a 2012 penny and a couple Dove chocolates (for the people who didn't win... my mom insisted) in the box. They were placed at the place seatings on the table. It gave people something to do as they waited for their table to be called for our buffet as well.

Wow MrsO, they're gorgeous! thanks for the great packaging idea, too! and i like the idea of getting a more elaborate game because, like you said, it'll keep the guests busier longer!

I am doing it for my wedding. Had stickers made up that say wishing u riches from the new mr & mrs. We also ordered 2012 minted pennies to be the lucky penny. It really depends on your crowd, it is common for us to give scratch tickets and lotto tickets for bdays so it won't seem out of place, however if nobody in your guest list gambles itd be awkward

I hope you'll consider updating your avatar to a unique picture -- the default rings sometimes get lost in the crowd. Smiley sad Here's how to do that and more: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/new-to-the-weddingwire-forums-please-read-before-you-post/b433c40c1a62b96a.html

I think it is a great idea. And as a guest I would love getting them as a favor rather than certain other things LOL
