Too cold for outdoor ceremony?

Sara, on April 11, 2012 at 9:52 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

Hi guys!

Okay, so I am getting married next Saturday in northern NJ, and the temperature is forecasted to be about 63 degrees next Friday. I said from the beginning that if the temperature was 65 degrees or above, I would keep everything outdoors.. having the ceremony inside would be a HUGE pain, so I am REALLY hoping to keep it outside on the boardwalk because it is SO gorgeous.

What are your opinions? How cold is "too cold" for a 20 minute ceremony? The cocktail hour is outside as well, but there are heaters set up in that area.

Thanks!

(In the picture, the ceremony is on the tented part of the boardwalk that looks like the bow of a ship, but the tent will be down for ours.)

I live in Rochester, NY and when it's 60 outside during spring people are usually in shorts. I wouldn't have an issue with that as long as it's not too long.

I don't think that 63 degrees is too cold... just advise your guests and you may want to invest in some heat lamps in case the temperature drops. Also, some lightweight shawls may be a nice last minute gift for your bridesmaids! Best of luck and congratulations!

@Blair - There are outdoor heaters set up in the cocktail area, there just isn't any room where the ceremony is.

I figured since it's a short ceremony it would probably be okay but I don't want anyone to be uncomfortable. Thanks!!

I'd just make sure your guests are aware that the ceremony will be held outside so they dress accordingly.

I'm from PA and a few weeks ago I was at a "Celebration of Life" at my parents' friends' house and it was outside. The weather was in the 50's and windy but everyone was dressed in warm weather. There was really no issues.

I have been to a wedding in the Florida "winter" in Feb. It was an outside cermoney and about 60 high with costal winds. We all survived. We just kept our jackets on until after the cermoney. You'll be fine!

That's fine, just let your guests know. Because it's not a long ceremony it shouldn't be a problem.

I don't consider 60 degrees cold. Your guests will survive. If there is sun, even better.

I am getting married next Saturday too and our forecast says 68. We will be doing ours outside as long as it is not raining. People will bring sweaters, jackets etc. Also, it is still 10 days away. The 10 day forecast isn't really that accurate. I am hoping for a heat up!

I agree with some of the other posters. I don't think that's cold, and as long as your guests realize that they are going to be outside, everyone should be fine.

As long as there isn't a strong north wind then I say go for it! Have the wedding you want - the guests can bring wraps if they need to.

63 here in NE isn't too bad. As long as the sun is shining and the wind is minimal, you will be just fine!! Go with it, that's what people have jackets for!! Good luck!!

60's here in Buffalo, NY is considered nice and like other posters said as long as you have sun it always feels warmer. People will know the weather and dress accordingly Smiley smile Stick with your outdoor plans!!

If most of your guest are from the area they won't think that is too cold and as long as they know it is outside I'm sure they will have a jacket with them. I wouldn't worry. 20 minutes isn't very long anyway.

People know it is outside and they should dress appropriately. As long as it isn't raining and nasty outside, 60 should be fine. Ours was outside in michigan in october and I would say it was probably 60. People just wore coats if they were cold!

I think you're 100% fine but I'm from Denver and people bust out their flipflops on sunny 40 degree days. Smiley smile

Could you buy some cheap shawls/pashmina type things and set out a basket of them for the ladies who don't wear coats? There are always girls who don't wear coats when they dress up. Not that it's your responsibility to dress them. But it could be a nice touch. Smiley smile

Considering I am originally from NY - I think you will be fine. Like some ladies have said - that is beautiful weather to those from the area. Now that I live in Florida - I would be freezing, but since I would know I would be cold - I'd dress for the occasion. You will be fine with an outdoor ceremony.

I think it will be slightly chilly, especially by the water. Also, 63 is a high temperature which is usually around 3PM or so, depending on what time of day your ceremony is it could be colder.

If it's sunny that day it will definitely feel warmer if people are sitting in the sunlight.

That being said it's a short ceremony so I think as long as folks have a light jacket/sweater they should be ok.
