Thoughts on cupcakes instead of traditional cake

Traci&Bob, on November 19, 2009 at 8:23 AM Posted in Planning 0 71

I absolutely love the cupcake idea, I love the photos I have seen of them for weddings. My FH was positive he wanted the traditional cake but yesterday he said we could get cupcakes. I told him I wouldn't do that to him, if having the cake was important to him then so be it but he said no, the more he thinks about it, he said it would be easier and less messy(cutting and all that) Our venue has nothing todo with the foodnor cake. We aredoing allthe cooking ourselves and so we would be cutting the cake ourselves and serving it. I like the idea of just having the little topper cake for us to cut and feed to one another and then our guests can help themselves to a cupcake whenever they want Smiley smile Your thoughts on cupcakes versus traditional cake?

I personally don't like the look of cupcakes but many people obviously do--they are so popular right now. If there is no one on staff to cut and serve the cake the cupcakes make a lot of sense for you to do because everyone just comes and grabs one for themselves or can be passed around to people easily on nice trays. I do like having a traditional small cake on the top so you can cut that and put some sort of cake topper on it.

I had a cupcake tree with topper for my wedding. Went over great.

Might be a bit far for you, the place was Caroline's Cakes near the Bay Bridge in MD. They rent the tree and all.

Thanks southerngirl, that was my thought, our venue is a firehouse hall, so noone is on'staff', just us, lol so it would be so much easier and convient to do the cupcakes. I would love a cake but this makes more sense. I talked to our baker yesterday and she said no problem doing it and she would make the smaller one just for us. Thanks for your input hon Smiley smile

We are doing a cupcake tree as well!! My thoughts were that many people don't eat the cake anyway and they are SO expensive. Plus with cupcakes you can offer a wide variety of options (both flavor & decoration), and I just think it looks more playful. One of my BMs works in the most amazing bakery, so I asked her for their pricing. She called me a few weeks later and said "I'd really like to do the cupcakes for your wedding as my gift to you guys". Initally I told her it was too much ontop of being a BM, but she kept reassuring me that cupcakes for 100 was nothing compared to what she usually does at work and she was really excited about it.

We're doing cupcakes. It'd be easier than having someone either (a) cut it for people or (b) people trying to do it themselves. And added plus, we don't have to worry about kids getting a hold of a knife. Smiley smile And for some a cupcake is just enough cake anyway.

I love the little cake on top Matt, that is what our baker said she would do for us so we can still do the traditional cutting of the cake and feed it to one another.

I know it's tradition and all, but don't bother saving it for the one year anniversary. It will taste freezer burnt. Maybe save a slice if you're a superstitious person. Eat it while it's good, you've paid top dollar for it!

I think so too Charolette, you don't cut a huge piece of cake anywaysSmiley smile Like I said, with our venue, it is US and that is it, lol, no staff or waiters so this would be so much easierSmiley smile

Here is basically what I would want, our colors are lavender and yellow, I would want half iced in lavender, half iced in yellow, on the lavender a yellow rose, on the yellow a lavender rose, similar to this...

I went to my first cupcake wedding in September. I think it's a cute idea, a question though - will someone be serving them or will people be coming up and getting their own? The reason I ask is that if people are getting their own, you should def. have more cupcakes than guests because many guests will take several since they look smaller than a cake slice.

One thing that this couple did that I didn't like was that they had a bunch of flavors, but different flavored cupcakes were all mixed up in the stand. So you'd have a lemon next to chocolate next to red velvet next to vanilla or whatever, but it wasn't clear which flavor was which and some of the flavors were gross. If you are having different flavors, I would recommend separating them in some way so that the guests know what they are getting and so they can make sure to pick one they like.

There are different sized cupcakes apparently. Our cupcakes were big, people wouldn't think of taking two. With that said, we had enough so that everyone would have one plus some extras, and we had a TON left over.

Likewise with cake, I see LOTS of cake going to waste at weddings.

Thanks yadayada, I think I ams ticking to basic yellow and chocolate cake. Oh and I agree with you about having extra cupcakes but I also was thinking of having the dj announce us cutting the cake (well duh of course, lol) and after we are done letting people know to come up and get one, my FH and myself can stand there or enlist the help of someone else to stay there and make sure everyone gets 1 and after that, if you want another, 1st come 1st serve til they are gone.

Yeah, that's a good idea. I only say because at this particular wedding these cupcakes were of the smaller variety and many guests (including me!) were guilty of taking 2-3 (in my case it was mostly cause the first two were flavors I didn't like-- I thought I was getting vanilla but got a lemon, then I thought I was getting carrot but got peanut butter, then finally I found a red velvet and ate that one!) But, they had plently left over so it wasn't a huge deal. You are definitely safe sticking to tried and true flavors like vanilla and chocolate (yum!)

That is what I am doing. The cupcake tree with a 6" cake on top. I am having an outdoor reception...very casual. The cupcakes go with what we are doing. I found a vender that just does cupcakes at a resonable price and they set them up for free. We are having four different flavor/ icing colors...Lemon/yellow, Strawberry/Pink, Vanilla/green (green is one of our colors), and Chocolate/Tan (you have to have chocolate.) I am decorating the stand with ribbons and flowers. I am very excitied about the cupcakes.

I see that some of your pictures the cupcakes have decorations. Keep in mind these cost extra. I am going with the basic cupcake with no extra decoration besides the icing. My vender will add color to the icing with no extra cost.
