Thoughts on cupcakes instead of traditional cake

I absolutely love the cupcake idea, I love the photos I have seen of them for weddings. My FH was positive he wanted the traditional cake but yesterday he said we could get cupcakes. I told him I wouldn't do that to him, if having the cake was important to him then so be it but he said no, the more...

I absolutely love the cupcake idea, I love the photos I have seen of them for weddings. My FH was positive he wanted the traditional cake but yesterday he said we could get cupcakes. I told him I wouldn't do that to him, if having the cake was important to him then so be it but he said no, the more he thinks about it, he said it would be easier and less messy(cutting and all that) Our venue has nothing todo with the foodnor cake. We aredoing allthe cooking ourselves and so we would be cutting the cake ourselves and serving it. I like the idea of just having the little topper cake for us to cut and feed to one another and then our guests can help themselves to a cupcake whenever they want Smiley smile Your thoughts on cupcakes versus traditional cake?

I think that you should have what ever you and Ross would like. From the pictures that I have seen of the cupcake weddings, they look pretty cute and it seems to be the in thing right now. I like the one with the traditional cake top. It certainly would be much easier to make and there would be no extra charge to decorate each of them or a portion of them. Also, you would not have a charge for cutting a cake......

I am on the fence about doing cupcakes. the only reason i'm on the fence is b/c FH is not completely sold LOL. i just really don't want to spend a ridiculous amount on a cake and cupcakes are usually cheaper. i want to do the small cake on top and maybe 2-3 different flavors of cupcakes. but our reception venue provides cake cutting service and they will serve our guests at their tables so that part really doesn't make any difference.

Ladylee, we got a price for our cake and when I decided to do this instead and called her about it, the price for the cupcakes would be about $75 cheaper than the cake!Smiley smile)

Traci, we have a tasting scheduled with a baker on the 12th so I am definitely going to ask about the price difference. I have instructions (and actually already bought supplies) for a DIY cake tower. We have 200 guests and the ones I've seen the kits don't hold that many. Anyway, I think the DIY is an excellent way to customize with our wedding colors!!!

    Traci,

    Congrats on the engagement!

Check with your bakery on the size of the cupcakes. Standard size cupcakes (which are what is provided 99% of the time) is the same amount of cake as a slice of cake at a wedding. So, you only need to order one per guest. And that is guest that is coming not guests that are invited. Usually a bakery needs a final head count 30 days before the wedding. In my case, if the final head is really set in stone and is less than what the contract state, I will refund the difference. So, if the contract states cake or cupcakes for 200 guests but the final head count is 175 guests, I will make cake or cupcakes for 175 and refund the money for 25 slices or cupcakes. Not every bakery does this, so double check. If the bakery you go with does not offer this, rule of thumb is # of guests x 75%. That will usually give you an accurate number of the people that will be able to attend.

Small cupcake trees can also be used as center pieces. That too saves money.

We've been thinking about doing cupcakes instead of a cake just because it would be a lot easier than cutting all the slices. Plus, people could bring extra home with them as a party favor!

I LOVE the idea of cupcakes! My FH on the other hand, doesn't. Smiley smile I think we are going to compromise and have 2 cupcake stands on the side and have a cake in the middle..just to keep him happy! Smiley smile

I like both cupcakes and cakes. They can be fun, simple, chic, it depends on how you decorate them. Cupcakes are so beautiful. There are different options:

    A) Cupcake tower

    B) Cupcake tower with small cake on top tier

    C) Dummy Cake (fake styrofoam cake) and cupcakes. The dummy cake looks exactly as a cake and is a good alternative if you are on a budget since you can rent it out and you eat the cupcakes or serve a sheet cake instead.

I think Cupcakes are great! My Fiance is like a big kid and he can't wait to have cupcakes at our wedding. I do however think that you should have your own top layers to cut into for traditional purposes.

According to industry forcasts The cupcake bubble is about to burst...see link below...I like the idea of cup-cakes for a Birthday party for children but for a wedding I guess I'm a little more traditional, although I see many Hybrids where they have a small cake topper to cut into and then several

tiers of cupcakes below. Let's face it, they appeal to the little kid in all of us...I say do what makes you happy.

Lol trend or not, were doing it because of the convenience it will gives us. It will have a small cake for us to cut and feed to one another but the guests can come and take then Smiley smile

I was going to to minicakes which are a little bigger than cupcakes and look like a miniture two tiered cake for each person because the restaurant wanted to charge $3.50 per slice cutting fee on a regular cake. I was able to negotiate the cutting fee down to $20 period and went with our regular cake but mini's are another option. My brother had cupcakes and they went went over well. Enjoy!

I have to admit, before reading this thread I was dead set against cupcakes. They just scream "3 year old birthday party" to me. However, Traci, you make a great point about the convenience factor. Our venue is our church coffee shop, and the only staff we will have is the coffee shop people, so no one to serve the cake. I've been stressing over what to do about that for a while, so maybe cupcakes are the answer. Hmmm....will have to think about it for a while.

That's our problem 3.6.10. No one is catering our reception, our venue doesn't do that, we are doing the food. With the cake, there is no one to wheel it away and cut it and serve it. I am FAR from lazy and selfish but I don't want to stand there slicing cake, lmao, and I don't/won't ask someone else to do it. As far as 'birthday party' looking, I truly believe it depends on what they LOOK like. Yea, if you get all kinds of colored frostings, yea, birthday looking, but you definitely can keep them elegant looking.
