Spin off: New last name jokes

LoveInDC, on March 4, 2016 at 10:38 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 114

So I know that there are a few of us out there that are excited about changing our names... but.

Whether it sounds like something funny, creates a funny first/last combo, or will have you saying "you know, like [blank]" for the rest of your life, what jokes are going to come after you change your name?

I won't have jokes but there a re some serious considerations for naming children. FH'S last name is Holder so names like Richard that can abbreviated to Dick don't work...

No jokes, but I'll have to spell it for everyone because it's Polish: Krzyzaniak (Kruh-zin-ee-ack)

    ETA: added pronunciation

My new last name is going to be Buskirk. My family cannot pronounce it. They always say "berserk". My sister sent FH and I a letter once that was addressed to "Jane Doe and FH (something)". Silly people.

Good thing my maiden name isn't common either so I'm already used to it.

Corinne I just laughed out loud at that.

I'll just have to spell my last name forever, but I already have that reflex because my current last name is difficult as well.

I'm already getting it, that I have one of the most generic names. Jessica Smith. But honestly I'm okay with it because I get to marry my best friend and love of my life.

Eta misread at first. Walking to work. No jokes for my new last name. Just my current one!

New last name with be Holman, which everyone hears as Coleman.

ETA: I have had to spell my current last name since I got it (adopted by step-dad), so I'm used to it.

Jessica, I thought I hated having Jones as a last name but it's actually nice because everyone knows how to spell/pronounce it. Generic can be a good thing.

    No jokes, just spelling.

When I was deciding whether or not to take his name, DH kept warning me that I would have to spell my name to everybody for the rest of my life.

New last name will be Barber. I honestly did not think that there would be any issues, I thought Barber would be one of the easier names to deal with. I told my cousin FH's last name for his wedding invites and they spelled it Barbour. I guess I will have to spell it out still for people.

New last name will be Kirkwood. Growing up FHs friends always called him Hard-wood. Lovely. Can't wait to bestow that upon our children (if we have them).

Neither of us go by our legal names, we go by Mina and Morgan. He uses the Irish version of Smith: MacGabhann.

So when people find our we're Lisa and Chris Smith, they laugh, because we sound super conservative, and are anything but!

My new name is Camara. So people usually spell it as camera. Lol our hashtag was actually #smileforthecamaras. My husband doesn't like when people mess it up though!

I am trading a very strong, boring name for a Greek one that's VERY easy to make fun of. I'm already bracing myself for our kids being called names in elementary school...FI was very much a "cool kid" growing up (lol, opposites attract), but I know his siblings had issues with it.

On a similar note, are you guys keeping your current middle names or dropping them for your maiden names? My middle name is my grandmother's name (very classic but I love it), but I really love my maiden name and don't want to drop it entirely. I'm torn...

Going from boring to more boring over here. Hastings to Johnson. -yawn-

ETA: Christina: I love that hashtag, it's so unique.

@twostep: my middle name is actually my mom's maiden name so I am keeping it!

The only one I know of I've already heard.... Vagillobos. (Villalobos) it's a stretch.

I'm leaving behind "Go for Hofer" and "Hofer a dollar" etc.
