My dj has a timer on his site that tells me how many mins per song and how much in total I have with all songs I think with four hours I had around 60 songs. I picked my reception music by the songs that I like to dance to. I also incorporated slow music for dinner (I am a fan of words so classical wasn't working for me) WW has a great selection of music and you can also you tube wedding music and that is pretty helpful. I am still working on my music and probably will till the wedding cause songs change and I go in and take music out and add new in lol.

We picked songs there were must have, def no's & guest requests... other than that the DJ picked the songs based on the list of songs we gave him.

Your DJ should be able to assit you with that. How it works with My DJ is that we pick songs that we like and do not play songs. He'll figure out the order based on the mood of the crowd and play other stuff.

The number of songs will vary greatly. However, I would caution you against "micromanaging" your music. When all is said and done, your 4 hr reception might only have about 90 minutes of real "dance" music (using a typical 60 min. cocktail hour, 1 hour dinner and 30 minutes for special dances/activities). If you can, ask your DJ to play some of your "must plays" during dinner... if the music is appropriate. Your DJ's biggest challenge is to keep the dance floor packed as s/he entertains your guests. If you have a very specific song list, there's a good chance that, even the best DJ won't be able to thread/mix them together well enough to keep your dance floor full.

We usually ask for no more than 10 "must play" songs. We will take other recommendations, but we usually like to have freedom to keep your guests dancing.

After the food and booze, the music is the most important thing for us. Heck, I can even deal with bad food, but not crappy music.

Our DJ is a friend who does weddings. He will play music for 6 hours. He actually prefers we "micro manage" our music. He wants a do not play list. He wants to know if guests can make requests.

We have divided our music into the cocktail/dinner music and the "dance" music. The cocktail/dinner music consists of ballads or non-dancing songs from bands we have seen: Rolling Stones; Santana; Heart; Van Morrison; Greg Allmen; Steve Miller Band; Cream; Billy Joel; Grateful Dead; Moody Blues; and Pink Floyd.

Dancing Music...He will play 2 slow songs for every 4 fast songs. Our fast dancing songs will include danceable classic rock; motown; 50's oldies; 70's disco; 90's club music and a smidge of country.

I gave our DJ the introduction song, garter toss, bouquet toss, first dance, mother/son, father/daughter, gave him a description of the guests, gave him a few must plays and left the rest in his hands, I figured if he was good enough for a major league baseball team party, he was good enough for us, he was amazing!

I gave him songs I love - about 10/20 so he got a feel for what we wanted. Told him genre's we don't like and he went from there. He was awesome, we were dancing ALL night.

I didn't choose the songs for the dancing part of the reception. Instead I had request slips for the guests to fill out.

Katrina - We typically can play about 18 songs per hour, and then subtract out the time where there will be no music; e.g., for toasts.
