Really really cheap wedding ideas?

Rebecca, on February 24, 2010 at 4:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 36

We are very broke but are planning on getting married this Spring. Our guest list is about 40 people, but we are cooking a hog which will feed a lot of people (yes, we live in the South). I am making my own invitations and center pieces to spare some change. Anyone have any cheap or free wedding ideas?

Do you or a relative have a garden? You can pick fresh hydrangea or wildflowers to use in your bouquets. I LOVE that look (and it's free, which helps!).

You have to give a little more to go on than that.

What exactly are you looking for ideas on?

Dont know what all you were thinking of getting. Sign up on Vista Print to get emails. I had an offer to get FREE Save the Dates. I got 50 of them and only paid shipping. They have lots of other stuff too.

But give us more direction and we can help out better.

    Happy Planning!

Hit thrift stores. I decided that all my centerpieces were going to be different. Im having 10 tables, head table, cake table, gift table, and guest book table. Ive gotten tons of baskets and ribbon from thirft stores. I also hit the end of season sales at Michaels and Joanns for flowers. Still trying to find the best deal on tulle.

We'll be having it in a small community center that hosts folks dances and such. We will decorate as cheaply as we can. The wedding itself will be slightly informal. The wedding party consists of us, a best man, my maid of honor, flower girl and ring bearer. We have our own play list which we will mix up. Some relatives are bringing food and we will have a freshly cooked hog (lol). We'll have a keg, wine, and champaign. Other than that, I really don't know. We just set the date so I just started getting ideas.

Here are some ideas off the top of my head:

    - Instead of hiring a photographer, ask all your guests to bring digital cameras and set up an account for all of them to upload the photos

    - Online/phone RSVPs

    - Buy wine by the case

    - DIY ring pillow, flower girl basket

    - Have someone you know bake the wedding cake/cupcakes

    - Use craigslist to find things other brides are discarding

    - If you have Ikea nearby, you can find a lot of cheap stuff there

    - Have a friend be your officiant

    - Instead of registering for only registering for kitchen supplies you'll never use, register gift cards or start a honeymoon registry

I know our local Dollar Stores are starting to get more things "wedding" related in all the time. I went in looking for little clay flower pots for our table numbers and saw a whole section.

jkjules had some really good suggestions.

I've also heard this, but dont know of anyone who's actually tried it, but if you have local college, see if they have a photography class. I've heard that they'll do shootings for free just for the experience.

    Try out ebay as well.

Ebay and craigslist are life savors. I've pretty much got everything on there. I would say try those first

TJ Maxx had a sale on Thank you cards that were really inexpensive and really cute. Also, like Denise said, the Dollar Store has some great things. They have bubbles 10 for $1 right now that are your standard wedding bubbles. They also had a ton or cute wedding themed ribbons and such.

Also, a packet of Avery labels of whatever size is neat b/c they have online templates you can use. We're printing some to put on our favor boxes to say "Thank You" for really cheap! You can put them on anything, though, and it'll look more personalized, yet they're cheap to buy.

The camera idea is key! Either on the invitations (if they're a bit more informal) specify that you want everyone to take pictures! Then on the program and/or on the thank you cards, provide info for a place to upload the pictures!

You southerners are really lucky especially if you're on the east coast because you have such a prolific number of flea markets and can find most anything there. Start hitting those you'll be amazed what you'll find. Also check out Craigslist and find out if there is a Freecycle program in your area. Additionally dollar stores are a dream and Dollar Tree online lets you order in bulk which can be really handy for flowers favors etc.. Wedding and bridesmaids dresses are super cheap on Amazon. Oh and compare the costs of the DIY invitation kits to the cost of creating an invitation through Vistaprint. I designed my own through the invitation tab rather than ordering through the Wedding section and it was 1/4 the price of the DIY with less hassle! If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

I got all the stuff for my flowers at the dollar store or walmart. I also found 24 bubbles for three dollars at Dollar Tree. A friend is making my cake. I am getting a gorgeous bridesmaid dress instead of a wedding gown. (Only because the design is more simple) But the wedding dress was 400$ more.

Vista print is awesome. I got my save the date, announcements and free business cards as my personalized place cards, and I'm thinking about giving magnets as one of my favors. Sign up at vistaprints and they will email you when they have a promotions which is daily. You can also go to orientaltrading.com.

I am using the dollar store for alot of stuff. Also office supply stores have precut magnets for business cards that I used for our save the dates. They turned out really nice. And places like Walmart and Target hav DIY invitations, 50 for $20. We are using those also. When you are deorating your tables, you dont have to overcrowd them to look nice. Less is more. Also, flower petals on Ebay are really cheap, and go along way on decorating. If you are wanting to use runners, paper or plastic is way cheaper, and you can just throw it away afterwards. Everytime you get paid go by a few things. We are doing this with the decorations, and it really helps.

I've been looking around alot at favors and the cheapest ones i could find are these cellophane bags:

    http://elegantlabels.com/giftpackaging_4x6cellobags.html

they cost just pennies each and you can put just a very small amount of candy in it, or bake your own cookies and put 1 in each bag. turns out to be a very cheap favor.
