Really really cheap wedding ideas?

Rebecca, on February 24, 2010 at 4:57 PM

We are very broke but are planning on getting married this Spring. Our guest list is about 40 people, but we are cooking a hog which will feed a lot of people (yes, we live in the South). I am making my own invitations and center pieces to spare some change. Anyone have any cheap or free wedding...

Write your own wedding ceremony and get a friend to perform it (make sure it's legal in your state first) to save the price of an officiant.

Try vistaprint.com. I purchased my labels which was free. Only paid for shipping and handing. I'm always searching for a bargain.

There are so many good ideas here but be careful.. When shopping dollar stores one can "over" shop easily. Vista Print is great - also you can create a free wedding website that can get iformation to your guests, from save-the-dates, to maps. As a Planner, my biggest concern is having a free officiant - state laws vary and you MUST know what they are in your area. Some states do not recognise Internet certification. I tend to use a local Justice of the Peace in these circumstances - the cost is usually minimal and there are no problems. Also love Etsy and Ebay - your computer is your biggest friend!! Good luck and have fun!!!

I to am planning on getting married @ home on a tight budget!

I was gona do my own invites until i started added up the price of ink, paper, etc. So i decided to get invites thru seal n send.com. The invite and response card is all in 1. its ez and simple and affordable. Check it out. For center pieces I am getting everybody i know w a clear vase to tape their name to the bottom and lend it to me for the day. and i am using cala lillies. I will buy them from our farmers market and put 4 in each vase on ea table. They are elegant all by themselves. My fh has lots of friends who can cook so food isnt a prblm. Trying to get my menu together is my issue at hand.

Did your see the button bouquets? if you dont have a set color theme, you could ask all your relatives for buttons and make some of those. You can find really cute pickeres on flickr.

You can also do garage sales and looks for pots or buckets for the center pieces, and fabric for tables. Its funny that im doing so many DIY projects, but never thought about the dollar tree till i read all your responses, now i want to go tomorrow!

Good luck, let us know what you came up with.

Since it seems like a southern theme, for centerpieces, how about this. Doesn't even have to be a mason jar just any jar they don't even have to match! very cheap. ask family for jars

Okay, I would suggest getting your theme or idea of style for your wedding/reception and then go from there. There are lots of flowers blooming in the spring time, you can pick them in a field somewhere. Go to the dollar general or even the thrift store and look for some jar/vase type things, they can be all different, then go from there!

    DIY everything you can!

Simple cheap flowers for bouquets... avoid out of season flowers. Cut out things you don't need or care about... favors is a good cost cutter... Avoid flowers in the centerpieces or use silk... Buy stuff that is on sale... (flower girl baskets after easter...) Think out of the box.. our "vases" are actually glasses Smiley smile much cheaper and same great look.

I wanted to have bubbles at our wedding, but didn't even think about Dollar General til I read this. Now I know where our bubbles are coming from (9 of those little bottles for $1.00)

I like the idea of wild flowers. If you know of a field that you can grab some from, that would allow you to have fresh flowers without the huge expense. (Just be sure to let the bugs get off of them first---Being from the South myself, I can assume that chiggers would not equal fun on the honeymoon. *grin*)

Oops!! I wrote that wrong... the 9 bottles of bubbles for $1.00 is from The Dollar Tree, not Dollar General.

I would check out dollar tree for sure. They have a lot of stuff that is great. Tea light candles, vases, mirrors, bubbles, I am doing a very cheap wedding too. I diyed everything: the food, cake (3 teir cheesecake), decorations, bouquets, invitations, (learned caligraphy and had wrote them bc with 50 ppl it was only like 20 invitations and it gave it a personal look) There is a lot to do to save money just pick your theme and hit garage sales and thrift stores ther is tons of stuff out there.

Write your own vows use the demo option then copy and paste into a word document: http://www.budgetweddings.info/vowmaster.html

Think yard sales and spray paint. I got cheap paint for $0.98.

Think outside of the box. Stuff is more expensive if you find it in the wedding section of any store. Sometimes you can find it yourself in another area for half the price.

Taytay I found organza bags you can use as favor bags cheaper than your cellophane bags. http://www.giftsintl-us.com/products.php?cat=2 they also sell really cheap ribbon there http://www.giftsintl-us.com/satinribbon.php. I got a lot of things like bubbles and fish bowls for my centerpieces at at the dollar store and some nice candle holders and flower vases at thrift stores. To save money on linens I bought these oversized curtains on clearance and hemmed them up and bought cloth tablerunners from the dollar store. I'm getting donated flowers, having a friend officiate the ceremony and I'm playing music off the laptop.

I'm with you on the broke bride front, Rebecca! Smiley winking

    Some ideas:

Free wedding website: www.wix.com (gorgeous, easy, and neat flash options. Be careful about using too much flash, tho. Can bog down older, slower computers.)

rings: Walmart. It's not Tiffany's, but you have many years ahead to upgrade later, should you choose.

Decorations: See if you can find a wallpaper pattern you like. Can use it to line invitation envelopes, programs, table card backs, table runners, and wrap around empty tin cans to make vases. If wallpaper's not your thing, you can get a monogram embossing stamp for about $30 and put it on all your paper items and napkins. If you haven't picked your colors yet, think about gold or silver. Common enough to find easily, looks expensive, but it's usually the same price as other colors.

    Music: www.playlist.com

Flowers: Costco/sam's club, wildflowers, or grow or make them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6cALKnFKp7o&feature=PlayList&p=8ABA4800B7684C7E&index=15
