I definitely don't think they are the same. The symbolic meaning is different in the way a promise ring is a ring to signify the promise of engagement ring someday. An engagement ring is symbolic to the commitment of marriage.

I had a promise ring when I was in HS. That was over 10 years ago and I don't even speak to the boy who got it for me. Its definitely a nice gesture but its not something to plan a wedding around necessarily.

However the RING itself... well it doesn't matter what the ring looks like its more about the meaning (if that is what you are referring to)

No. A promise ring is just a symbol of affection. An engagement ring = commitment.

Agreed not the same ... in fact all through high school, my FS did NOT ever give me a promise ring ... and honestly I think it was a good move because my friend got one from every guy she dated and now she doesn't speak to any of them ... A Promise Ring to me is just puppy love an Engagement ring is I love you I truly love you and I love you so much I want to spend the rest of my life with just you ... so no way at all is it the same!

I've had a promise ring since our first anniversary... it only took him 4 1/2 years more to propose - totally different!

It depends on the context, but I agree they are different. However I do know some girls that have been proposed to with a promise ring, and later FH upgraded to a "nicer" engagement ring at a later date and they then announced their engement.

Also a promise ring can stand for anything you want it to. It can be puppy love or it can be something much more meaniful.

Now if he promised with promise ring because its cheaper and money is an issue sure its the same deal when people dont ghave one. however if just gave you a promise ring that is and did not pop the question then its just a ring.

A promise ring just mystifies me. A marriage itself is a promise. So an engagement is a promise to make a promise. And then a promise ring is a promise to make a promise to make a promise?

I tend to prefer things to be more direct. I have never worn a promise ring, and never even had an engagement ring in my second marriage.

I think promise rings are more of a "high-school" thing. Like "Here's a ring, I promise to propose to you after we're old enough to see an R-rated movie!"

Nope, not the same! I got a promise ring from DH after 6 months of dating, it was kind of like a promise towards the future (commitment) although he did say when he gave it to me that he wanted to marry me some day. I was 15 so I was ecstatic! The engagement ring came after 4 years together, and the wedding ring came after 6 years together. Smiley smile

They are definately differnt... I got a promise ring from my FH after we dated for almost a year and it took him 4 more years to actually pop the question and get me an engagement ring. granted we were young and knew that we would get married some day but I was definately ready. I used to wear quite a few rings, but now I only wear the promise ring (the very first ring he gave me) and my engagement ring. Next year I will be adding the final piece to my collection! I think that in our age they are important to young couples to show that there is commitment in a reationship, but it is different than and engagement ring.

LOL, I guess a "promise" doesn't really mean a promise.

I was always under the impression that a promise ring was a religious "abstinence" thing. all of my friends who got them were abstaining until marriage so their bf would give them promise rings as a "im making a promise that i will marry you and save myself for you" kind of thing.

I more recent friend of mine's bf gaver her one before he went away to college and the promise was the he would stay faithful to her and also he was promising that someday he would marry her.

Personally i find the whole thing kind of silly, unless its for reasons like Shannon C said and its a promise to get a better ring when the money is available. other than that just make a verbal promise and save your money for the real deal!
