This is a tricky question. FH got me a promise ring 2 years before he proposed. But we had already committed to one another, so my promise ring was basically just a cheaper "fill-in" until he could afford a nicer one. Also, neither FH nor I wanted to be engaged for forever, so even though we knew we would get married someday, he waited to do the official engagement until it was closer to the time when we would get married.

I think they mean different things to different people. I've known people who got "promise" rings but broke up, and I've known people who got promise rings and got married.

An engagement ring is a promise to marry you, a promise ring is a promise to lead you on......

I had a promise ring once...then i went to college and discovered men, beer, and freedom...**sigh** no but seriously promise rings confuse me too. espeically when 'adults' get them...like i know a 22 year old who gave his gf of 4 years one...i was like 'man up and call it an engagament ring buddy!"

A big difference and yet a prelude to the engagement.

I had a promise ring from my last serious relationship before FH. When he gave it to me he said,(roughly)- this is a promise that I will love you forever. I'm not ready to get engaged yet, but I wanted you to know that I love you, I am committed to you and I never want to lose you.

It was really sweet. He did love me until the day he died. Now I am just not sure what todo with the promise ring.

I got a promise ring at the age of 34 after 6 years of being together. Since it's not the engagement ring, there is an overwhelming sense of disappointment. I wonder if this is another action to stall more time. Signed been one foot out the door, and this may be a sign to just leave. Honestly, he couldn't come through with an engagement ring.

Well as much as I don't have a comment for this I have a question that I did not see awnsered, so 1st time engagement here so I'm asking for advice, the promise ring I gave my girlfriend she loves it and it originally was given to me by a deceased family member, she has started to talk about family and weddings so I figure ones the perfect time, do u think it's cheap or tacky to take the ring and get it upgraded, maybe a new socket or 2 or maybe bigger diamonds plus get it engraved and present it as an engagement ring?
