professional hair and makeup on wedding day... which is first?

FallBride, on August 17, 2012 at 9:13 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 31

I'm trying to schedule hair and makeup services for wedding day. I'm also considering hiring two different artists, one for hair and one for makeup. So what should I have done first?

My ceremony starts at 2:30pm and the photographer arrives at 1pm for some bridal pics.

So I think maybe I should start the pampering process around 11am... ahhh... so many things to think about... help pleaseeee

I believe ladies have done make up first, that's what I plan on doing!

I hired a hair person & a make up artist. They both arrived at the house at 10am to set up. It was me, 3 BM, a flower girl & 2 moms. Everyone was done by 2:30 I believe. I did hair first, then make up… but some girls did make up first… it really didn't matter. My photographer came at 2 I think (it's all a blur now) and snapped some getting ready photos and me getting in the dress. Nothing felt rushed and everyone was calm and relaxed.

If your ceremony is at 2:30, 11am might be too late. But it depends on how many people you have getting ready. Your stylists will help you figure out the start time as well.

I think it is however you want to do it, there doesn't seem to be a part of the process that depends on the other, or that could mess the other up.

Make up first so you will look pretty while she is doing your hair. i hired the professional that does both, so she will do the make ups first, then my hair.

I personally like to do makeup last so its nice and fresh for pictures. (I did bridal makeup for many years)

I had 2 girls from the same company, one who did makeup and one who did hair. On our day of, I had makeup done first and then hair and my MOH had the opposite.

On the trial when it was just me having them done, the MUA started working on my makeup as my hair stylist was curling my hair. Then the MUA finished and then the hairstylist finished.

Are your girls getting their hair and makeup done by these people as well or is it just you? The stylists, even if they aren't from the same place, might still have a usual routine that works best for them so I would discuss it with them as well.

I am doing hair first and makeup later - I didn't want to chance ruining the makeup by having hair spray or other products get on my face.

I am doing my hair first and make up second. Both professionals agreed on tthis order and it made sense to me so I booked it that way. Now that I have both trials I beleive doing hair first (becuase it was rock hard) is the best choice.

My hair stylist asked that I have my make up done first since I'm using airbrush and getting the tattoo on the back of my neck covered. She didn't want to have to re-do or adjust my hair if any make up got on it. Also I feel like this will let me see how the make up is setting and get touched up as necessary by my MUA Smiley smile

    Hello!

As a Makeup artist I can tell you that it really depends on each artist. Personally I like for the bride to have hair first in case the hair needs heating tools, or blow dryers that may warm up her face/skin. Also for soft waves, or curls the hair can take a little time setting, so the artist can prep your hair and start your makeup after ( prep your skin and such) As for the BM's and MOH it is up to the discretion of the artist, hair style, time, etc.

Again, it depends on the artist and how they feel it would be best. Speak with your vendor prior to your trial, and you both can try it during your trial.

If you have further questions or makeup pictures feel free to email me or visit my website!

My mom and I both had our hair done first then our makeup, while my MOH and bridesmaid had their makeup done first and then their hair. This is how it worked out with the stylists and artists and our timeline.

I would say hair first. Water shampoo and heat can ruin your make-up.

As a Makeup Artist- while in school, it was drilled into our minds that its:

    Hair FIRST

    Makeup LAST

Reason? HAIRSPRAY- that stuff will make you look greasy, sweaty, oily and shiny, as a bride you definitely don't want anything like that- matte matte matte- ok and a little highlighting Smiley winking

there are other reasons also: lasting longer, having a fresher look right for the photos, etc...

However if your MUA artist is hangin around for your bridesmaids or moms, I suggest having your eyemakeup done, have her tone and moisturize your skin, then have your hair done- then have her finish your foundation and set it. **in a perfect world**

In the end as long as you have your MUA touch you up after your hair is done you should be fine, and maybe some anti shine on hand lol- depends how nuts your hairstylist goes with hairspray

So really whatever works with your schedule- GIVR!

It all depends on how many bridesmaids and women in the family getting blowdries and styles. Never be the last one in line so it's "fresh" it's YOUR day so YOU should be the number one priority. I usually style a bridesmaid or two, allow the bride to socialize and finalize her look based on the looks we've tried prior to the day of, then set the bride's hair in pincurls for staying power, and while the hair is setting I proceed to doing her make up and the reat of the bridal party! Hope that helps. Also allow at lease 30 minutes per hair or make up service prior to your photography start timeSmiley smile For more beauty tips visit my blog http://www.ambergimbel.com

I am having my hair done first. That way my makeup won't get messed up when my hair is washed. Also hairspray, heat, etc can ruin your makeup.

I also hired both (not just one person to do both).

We are doing makeup first because I have long side-swept bangs and my hair gal doesn't want the makeup gal to have to pin back my hair once it's already "done."

My photos start at 4pm. Makeup starts at 11:45. Hair at 1:30. I plan to be at the venue and getting into my dress around 3:15, if that helps!
