As a plus sie bride, the entire experience of dress shopping has me completely fed up! I refuse to think any less of myself because I am "bigger" than a size 2! Which is the size of every dress that looks half decent in these stores! Why are the plus size dresses so incredibely ugly??? After an appointment at David's bridal, I left totally upset with the limited variety of "plus size" dresses that they had to offer. I saw plenty of gorgeous dresses that I would absolutely love to try on, but of course..none in my size. Being a size 20 is pretty normal these days, I would think. Half of America is overweight! Anyone agree?

I also had a horrible experience at DB. I wear a size 14 jeans, but the "girls" are ungodly big so I need to try on size 22 dresses. Not a single one at DB's fit. I went to a much smaller store and they had a great selection of dresses in EVERY size!

Thank you ladies for the support =) I feel alot better now and I'm ready to find the dress of my dreams! (like the one below)
Regardless of my size/height and everything that society says I should be... I know that God knows my true beauty, and frankly my dears, that's all that matters!

p.s. The pic below is from a wholesale website, so that's why there's a little dino friend in the pic..it's definitely NOT part of the dress hehehe

I am a 14. However, sometimes because of "the girls" I need a 16 or 18. I figured since that was street size, I would need plus size. After a horrid experience at DB, not even trying them on, just brousing, I left feeling like a cow, not a beautiful bride.

I called Alfred Angelo. I explained my situation to the consultant. I gave her style #'s I liked. She made sure they were in for me to try on. I went for my appointment. As it turned out, the consultant was a big girl. Thank goodness, had I had a perky little young thing, I would have left thinking of the stories she would regale her family with when she worked with the old fart bride. Well..as it turns out, in AA dresses, I didn't need a plus size. The dress my FH picked fit me. It is a BM dress. I am wearing it in champagne.

Pick styles and call ahead to be sure they have them. Unlike DB, AA dresses are sold in dif boutiques.

My dress below was ordered in a bigger size obviously.

I agree with you about David's Bridal.... I have looked there as well and my mom keeps telling me to go back but they were so rude and there was not a large selection. I did go to Georgio's Bridal though and tried on a couple of dresses that were pretty even though they weren't "The One". I recently have been shopping on craigslist where I have found several used and new plus size bridal gowns and I have also looked at my local resale shop. With half of America being plus size I figured why not look through used dresses. Hope you have found the dress of your dreams by now.

I got a DB dress, but got it at a consignment store rather than DB itself. Being able to try on the actual dress in my size--and to take it home the same day--was wonderful!

I'm sorry you had a bad experience at DB. I got lucky, I had an amazing consultant there, though I'm not a plus size bride, so I'm not sure if it would have been differnt if that were the case. I would hope not. I know Maggie Sottero makes her dresses in all sizes. A friend of mine is a size 20 and loved her dress from Maggie.

I think smaller botiques seem to have more sizes than the bigger "DBs". Good Luck! PS: that dress is beautiful (w/o the dino of course Smiley smile

This is why I am scared to go shopping. By no means am I small! But, I believe Shauna B posted a site for plus brides and I loved the saying on the website. It was something along the lines of fs's not always loving a smaller girl : ) I am definetly going to be looking at AA!

It should not surprise anyone that the shops think size 2 and 4 are normal. It is what Hollywood tells them we should all be. It is a bunch of BS. I am a size 10. I had zero luck finding a dress. I finally ordered one from Nordstrom online. I am 6'1" Try to find that anywhere. I when short because I was going to be in Hawaii and I knew I would not have to extend the hemline. Tiny ladies are the minority so wake up dress shops. We have the money if you have the dress.

Don't feel bad. I am an 18 in clothes, but when they measured me, I ended up being a size 28! I wanted to cry when they told me that. It was because my measurements were "different". I didn't bother trying on dresses. I just looked online for one I liked.

I agree, i ordered a 16 and my sisters and I are all big girls, i got lucky cause I know what styles suit my size and what i like, I ordered my dress online for $300 so i figured if i didnt like it i could sell it for 300 since most places i was looking at wanted $800

even at alfred angelo it was difficult having my sisters try on BM dresses, the sales lady was very kind about it and was very helpful with suggestions on ways to make it all uniform yet suite everyone's body type.

This is my dress and when i wear it I think it sucks in my tummy well.

I think anything with a structured or stiff bodice works well for plus sizes my sister and I went for that type.

By the way, the dress you chose is going to look GREAT on you!!!!!

I had a good experience @ DB! and I ordered an 18. At Alfred Angelo however the lady had me try the only size they had. I initiall wanted one of AA "Little White Dresses" Honey that thing was a 10 and went it went over my but the zipper ripped and guess what. I left the store because I was pissed they didn't have anything in the"Little White Dresses larger than a 10 WTF? She wanted me to order the dress in a larger size. I wasn't doing that w/out knowing if I like how it looks on my body type. So thanks DB in Glen Burnie, MD so far so good!

Thanks Koda Bridal for the shout out . I do carry " real sized " gowns for " real women ".....need to get rid of that whole " pus size " name. The size inside is just a number , just like age is just a number !

@Angela ~ we are actually going to be doing a Bridal Show on Sunday, March 6th at the Hilton Ontario Airport and would love to meet you,! Our fashion show is at 1:30 and you will be please to know ~ we use "real " girls.......

Never give up, never surrender! There are lots of places that suck for us larger, lovelier ladies, but do not give up and go to as many places as you want!
