Plus Size Bride Fed Up!!!!

Angela, on March 1, 2011 at 3:28 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 91

As a plus sie bride, the entire experience of dress shopping has me completely fed up! I refuse to think any less of myself because I am "bigger" than a size 2! Which is the size of every dress that looks half decent in these stores! Why are the plus size dresses so incredibely ugly??? After an appointment at David's bridal, I left totally upset with the limited variety of "plus size" dresses that they had to offer. I saw plenty of gorgeous dresses that I would absolutely love to try on, but of course..none in my size. Being a size 20 is pretty normal these days, I would think. Half of America is overweight! Anyone agree?

I totally agree with you. But don't give up there are lots of dresses out there for us plus size ladies or have you given any thought to having a dress made for you?

It's totally unfair. I'm not plus size, but when I went dress shopping with a best friend of mine who is, it was ridiculous. They had next to no dresses for her to try on. The ones that were close enough were just plain ugly. I felt terrible and p*$$ed. Every woman should enjoy dress shopping and feel like an effin princess! Sorry you had to go through that, are there any other local bridal boutiques in your area??

I agree with you as well. with as many overweight people as there are in the US, which currently is @ 66% of americans are overweight, it stumps me why there are more size 2,4,6,8 dresses than **** and + dresses-- I do know that it costs more to use more material especially in a wedding gown, but REALLY.. even if these stores has to pay 20$ more per dress to have on site as sample gowns, I think they would turn more of a profit. It DOESNT make sense to me. You are not alone on this on Angela.. keep your head up, you will find the dress of your dreams Smiley smile

Completely agree. Keep looking and keep positive! There are some beautiful dresses out there for brides who don't fit what they want us to think is the "norm."

I'm a 16 and had to get a 16W dress at Davids. I also was not happy with their selection but did find one I loved.

I would try Alfred Angelo, I'm a plus size bride and I had a great experience with them. That's where I bought my dress from. They were super nice and had sever options for me to try on.

I agree and the worst thing is the sizes some of the places consider plus size. I lost some weight going from 143 to 135. (I'm only 5'2 and have two kids). When I was looking for a dress I walked in and they were nice at first and then handed me a size 8 dress....It looked like something for a stick figure. Smiley sad The lady got frustrated when it wouldn't fit and had me try on a few 14s and 16s after a while which fit a lot better. Though once I had to go into those bigger sizes she started ignoring me and helping 'smaller' costumers. I talked to the manager, but she didn't even care. All she said was 'well we do offer things that could slim you down a bit'. I just rolled my eyes and left. Don't let it get you down. Try local dress shops around where you live. They may have nicer ones for non-stick figures. And most of America is overweight according to charts. In fact I am supposedly 15-20 overweight for my height. But meh...I think I look good anyway.

I'm so sorry you had a bad experience. I'm a size 16 and fortunately the David's in my area had lots to choose from. I did go to a smaller shop and the girl tried to squeeze me into a size 10 over and over again. I left there so defeated! But I didn't give up and found the perfect dress and I know you will too!!!

Alfred Angelo or try Demetrios, they were great for me as well ... I feel ya though, I'm very plus sized and no matter what all clothes seems to be to ugly or the cute ones are to expensive ... sad part is many many salons consider anything over a sz 8 plus size ... where are you at? if you give us a general area of where you live, we could maybe help google some shops that have plus size gowns.

I knew realistically that the bridal shop can't carry every dress in every size, but honestly since David's Bridal and Alfred Angelo both show extensive selections of plus size dresses online they SHOULD carry a good selection in stores too! I'm so sorry you had a bad experience! I agree with Greyash, try Alfred Angelo's if you have one in your area.

Angela, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. You and the others who commented, (and me and my friends) are the reason I opened my store. Pittsburgh is a little far from CA, but call Village Bridal Boutique. She's in Fallbrook CA. She might have some recommendations for stores near you.

I'm sorry your frustrated. I tried on dresses last week with my teen daughters, who were very supportive. Same problem I always have, size 10 jeans but I can't get anything buttoned over my girls. We tried a size 16 but then they were hanging out. My FH would die if I was all cleavage at our wedding. LOL

Awe that's so unfair. Of course the briday shop only had a few samples in my size, so it's a good thing that I already knew which dress I wanted before I came in. Oh and I ordered my dress without trying it on. I knew in my heart that it was the one. I normally wear a size 12 and they were trying to get me to order a 18. No I'm not paying extra for fabric that I don't need. I am in the triples so I needed a larger size. They ended up having to make the dress with my specific measurements, and it actually fits really well. I'll have to get it taken in at my hips. I'm fine with that.

I feel your pain. I am in a size 16/18 myself and I found nothing at David's Bridal I liked. In fact, it sent me into tears. I went into a boutique that sells Maggie Sottero though and the sales ladies were so awesome. They made the experience fun. I ended up driving all of the way to Boise, ID from Portland, OR to see a dress and I did end up ordering it locally. Maggie dresses go up to size 32. It's just bulls**t that the stores tend to not carry a good selection of plus sizes.

Ohh I agree with you, it seems like they want to put the same amount of work and detail into a larger dress and duhh.. they shouldn't!! They should make it as beautiful, add extra things to make it look the same and not just leave more mt space in between accents or whatever they have.

    BIGGGGGG GIRLSSSSSSSSS MOUNT UP!!!!!! LOL!!

I totally AGREE with you!!!! As a lot of these women on this post know...I was in the same boat. I did a couple of FED UP post. But I went back to David's Bridal and gave them one more chance and I ended up going with a dress I already had tried on. I think the way these bridal shops treat plus size is AWFUL!! I went to one store where they wanted me to pay HALF of the dress before they would order it and I would not get to try it on first. I was like "HELL NO"!!!! Why would I order something that important to me and can't try it or something similar to it on. UGH!!!!!! I'm sorry you are experiencing trouble. Here is my dress I got from DB...maybe you can go back and try this one once to see how you like it.

Angela , in general I've heard and found out for myself this past month that the customer service at Davids Bridal is CRAPPY!!! I visited the Pinole site and it was horrible, The entire experience is nothing like I had hoped for. I'm a DB size 12 and they still had a limited # of dress for me to try on. They kept trying to squeeze me into a 6 or 8 SERIOUSLY!! There is nothing worse than trying to see what a dress looks like on you when the girls can't be squeezed into the right location. I'm hoping that the Cupertino location has more to offer as there are a couple there that I'd really like to try on but I'm not ordering it if I can see what it looks like.

I was lucky and found a little shop in camarillo which had all the dresses in the smaller sizes and larger sizes to try on, I also had gone to davids and had a horrid experience so that was not an option for me.

    I <3 my Maggie
