As a plus sie bride, the entire experience of dress shopping has me completely fed up! I refuse to think any less of myself because I am "bigger" than a size 2! Which is the size of every dress that looks half decent in these stores! Why are the plus size dresses so incredibely ugly??? After an appointment at David's bridal, I left totally upset with the limited variety of "plus size" dresses that they had to offer. I saw plenty of gorgeous dresses that I would absolutely love to try on, but of course..none in my size. Being a size 20 is pretty normal these days, I would think. Half of America is overweight! Anyone agree?

As much as I hate hate HATE DB with a burning passion, and I desperately wish they'd cater to a more broad demographic, I just wanted to pipe in about something real quick.

I'm a size 2/4. I scarf chocolate constantly, and pretty much never work out. I've just always been thin and, judging by my family, always will be. That doesn't make me any less lovely or intelligent or normal than anyone else. Nor does it mean that shopping is any easier for me. As much as I enjoy reading your stories and being able to relate to some of your experiences, I've never once said a big woman wasn't beautiful or normal. So it kinda sucks when those kinda things are said about us "twigs".

Man, where's Cabell when you need her? She always puts it better.

I understand, Carmen, and agree. Current societal rules dictate that it's not ok to point out/isolate/make fun of people for being 'too'large (whatever that means), but that it is completely acceptable to laughingly tell a thin girl to "eat a cheeseburger." When you're on the small side of "normal" it's also a challenge to go shopping and find nice things...there's no need to suggest that thin girls are any less beautiful or deserving of good wedding dress experiences.

I'm sorry that you've had such a problem dress shopping. I was a size 22 when I went dress shopping at DB and I had an excellent time. My consultant was very helpful, if a little annoyingly chatty. I showed her the different dresses I was looking at that I wanted to try on. Unfortunately they didn't have all of them in plus sizes, but she went off of my inspirations to bring me other plus-size dresses. And believe it or not, one of the dresses she decided to bring me ended up being the one. Don't give up trying. People have horror stories of DB, but my experiences have always been pleasant. Just keep trying and you'll find your perfect dress.

@ Mrs. Carmen-- you took the words right out of my mouth. I'm the exact same way (in regards to build & genetics) and when I called a bridal boutique I was told to just get used to being discriminated on because I'm simply too small as if it were a bad thing. And, I get eating disorder jokes all the time. I just wish people were able to accept others as they were.. including bridal stores. Offer more than just one or two sample sizes!!

I have run across several plus sized brides that are satisfied w/ sites like http://www.dressilyme.com/ and tradetang.com... find a dress that u like, send http://www.dressilyme.com/ and they can recreate it for you... Now they are overseas so there may be some risk w/ that... but I found out DB is overseas as well...

Good luck - as I was just telling a friend all the plus size dresses look like moo moo's

I haven't started looking for dresses (in person) yet since I know tons of new styles are going to be coming out between now and when I actually NEED to look for a dress. But I am also a plus size bride and I know that when I decide it to go try on dresses it is going to be a nightmare! Especially since this is my 2nd marriage and I do NOT want to wear all white. *sigh* But I am going to stay positive and go to Alfred Angelo first since they have lovely wedding dresses with color! @ Ashely Snaps & Mrs Carmen - it isn't right to say anything about someone's weight no matter their size. My MOH (who is very slender) gets told all the time that she has chicken legs and now she has a complex. I tell her all the time she is beautiful and not to listen to those stupid comments from people when she wears a skirt!

Didi-- absolutely! I don't understand anyone's logic in asking "are you really going to eat that? What about your dress?" or stating "Your dress is just going to fall off if you don't stop losing weight." (which, by the way I don't TRY; it's just how I'm built.)

I don't understand why so many people are consumed with OTHER people's weight, ya know? Why can't marraige be the symbol of love that it's meant to be? I feel like the industry is trying to change it to being all about image. We're all beautiful, dang it!! Smiley smile

I went to DB and got my dress. I had to try on some dresses that weren't my size, some were too big and others were too small but they used clips to clip them to my bra and it worked out well. I had a great consultant so I guess it all depends on where you are and who you work with. Here is my dress:

I think the reason why you have less choices as a plus size is because all designs are made around these really skinny models therefore certain details when you try to scale it up just don't look good, and certain dresses have shapes that would just look awful on a plus size like a mermaid dress. If there was a designer that started the designs with heavier models instead of the 0 sizes and scale up it would be much easier for plus sized girls.

I see weight problems as health issues not as a beauty measurement and if that 66% of overweight americans do decide to lose the weight it should be because they are worried about their hearts, joints and whatever else could be affected by weight and not because of fashion.

My first visit at DB was horrible too and I was in tears..At the time I wore a size 16 so I had to try on 18-20W dresses they were all ugly! I made a second appointment with a diff person she was great but really they don't have a large selection so I ended up buy a dress that I didn't like, however I took it to a seamstress and made it my own (see before and after pics) my dress is an 18W I've lost 15 lbs and plan on loosing more so I will just have more alterations done..

Have you tried the online section of DB? They seem to have a lot of options but I guess you'd probably want to try it before you buy it.I ended up finding a dress at Filene's basement running of the Brides in NYC in Feb.good luck and stay positive.I'm sure you'll find that dress someway somehow.

I am a plus sized bride, and I went to David's they had like 2 dresses & they were rude! I ended up getting an Alfred Angelo dress which I love! If you go get measured at a dress shop there are alot of vendors on ETSY or EBAY that make custom dresses pretty cheap! I hope you find the dress of your dreams! =))

@Alyssa-I saw that dress in a magazine and told my mom I wanted the dress in blue just to tease her and she fell for it! It is a GORGEOUS dress and I would have loved to try it on just once but no store in my lovable but hicktown state has this line!

@Carmen-I don't think that it's OK to make comments about "twigs" or about those who are "plus sized". I often think those who comment on your weight (family included) are jealous of your body for whatever reason there may be. My grandmother looked like a complete idiot for making a comment about how I was "gaining weight" when I wasn't because my stomach was growing to make room for baby. Even when she saw me resting my hand on my stomach like a pregnant lady does. Whenever anyone makes a comment about my weight I set the record straight. And either they'll look like idiots like my grandmother did or walk away with the whatever face.

I think society needs to change from fitting into some mold to being appreciative of their own bodies and being healthy. If weighing 185 is being healthy for me and my baby right now I am okay with it.

FYI: Trudy's Brides boutique in Campbell, California is having a plus size show tomorrow. I don't know how far away you live from the Bay Area but it might be worth checking out or seeing if any shops near you will be holding a show soon.
