As a plus sie bride, the entire experience of dress shopping has me completely fed up! I refuse to think any less of myself because I am "bigger" than a size 2! Which is the size of every dress that looks half decent in these stores! Why are the plus size dresses so incredibely ugly??? After an appointment at David's bridal, I left totally upset with the limited variety of "plus size" dresses that they had to offer. I saw plenty of gorgeous dresses that I would absolutely love to try on, but of course..none in my size. Being a size 20 is pretty normal these days, I would think. Half of America is overweight! Anyone agree?

Got my size 16 dress at DB but I have a few tips. I fired my first sales girl at DB. She was a twig and actually was arguing with me when I said I am a 36 G bra so no strapless please. (Sorry I like my boobs at boob height and not at my waist thank you very much). I told her to take a hike and saw another sales girl putting away dresses that was a bit chunky with huge boobs (my kind girl)! I asked her to help me and it was totally different experience and she totally got me and understood how to fit my dress. I got the halter oleg cassini (tried on 18 and 14 but bought 16). It might be worth going back on a weekday and seeing what another sales girl can do since they do have good prices and a bunch of dresses come in plus sizes. It I didn't find something there I was going to look at Alfred Angelo next.

Some of the "helpers" at these bridal boutiques can be SO rude! I went dress shopping with my best friend since we are getting married 4 months apart. I usually wear a size 8 (well, 2 yrs ago, I did, but I may have gained 5-10 pounds since then) so I chose an 8 without really thinking about it. The attendant was trying to zip the back up and when it wouldn't, I laughed and said, "Well, I guess I'll need a 10"...she looked disgusted and said "you're not going to fit into a 10 either"

Needless to say, I haven't returned to THAT store. Smiley smile I'm sorry you had to go through this! Keep your chin up! I'm sure you will find a place that will accommodate you and treat you like the princess you deserve to feel like! Smiley smile

@Shauna, Than it is all good!

@Jess...LMAO...It really does all depend on the consultant. Funny, I wound up with a halter too. It was the last thing I ever thought I would pick. I haven't worn a halter since before I got preggars 25 years ago. That would be when the big girls could stand up for themselves ; )

I have to totally agree with you. The dress im wearing I ordered off line. I had a seamstress take my measurements and ordered my dress 1 inch bigger to all measurements except length and shoulder to shoulder. I ordered my dress from

    www.milanoo.com

i saw my dress at a bridal shop for $1800.00 in Chicago not in my size of course and was told it could not be ordered in my size. I came home and put cheap wedding dresses into the google search and about a dozen sights came up on the first page. I checked them out and found my dress. For $133.99 and it could be ordered up to a size 28 or for an additional amount of money it can be maid to your measurements. but order a size bigger so you can have alterations before the wedding. Good Luck and I hope you find your dress

I understand. Then the dresses you do fit into are like (eek). I hate when they say well we can still try on dresses even though they are snug. NO I wanted to try on dresses that fit me only. How in the heck am I suppose to know how I will feel if I can't fit in it? I found a local shop and ended up finding my dress. But if they didn't work I would of gotten mine from David's bridal. I just got lucky that they had a wall of plus size. It makes me want to lose weight but at the same time I am not going to change my whole entire body image for one single day because you don't have dresses that are not in a sample 18.

Go to the Alfred Angelo line. They have gorgeous dresses that would fit a size 20. www.alfredangelo.com

What I love the most is whether you're a 16 or a 16W you pay the same. None of that "extra fabric" fee crap that other stores like to pull.

As many of the other ladies mentioned, AA dresses tend to run on the larger size. Another designer is the same, Mary's: http://www.marysbridal.com/

You can also check out house of brides: http://www.houseofbrides.com/c-7-plus-size.aspx

the other thing you need to remember is that if you find a dress that's just 1 size too small, you can get the rough idea AND your dress is ordered specifically to your measurements. measurements differ designer - designer though meaning you could be a 16 in AA but a 20 in Mary's.

The plus sized diva had to chime in! First order of business.....that dress you love is Sottero and Midgley ASM3297. Second I really feel your pain....I went shopping alone and there was one salon that had a few dresses for me to try on. I ended up with a Priscilla of Boston gown.....while they had an 18 to try on in the store didn't have what I ended up with.....I went on faith and it sucks that I had to do that. Some designers are becoming more plus sized friendly. Not sure what your price point is but try AA, Kirstie Kelly red label, la sposa has a plus sized line and enzoani is supposed to have one as well. Good luck and if ya need anything pm me!

Try Mori Lee. I fell in love with a dress from their Julietta collection. They start at 16W. I am normally a size 16 and I ordered a size 16W. Their website will show you stores that carry them in your area. Good luck!

I can totally relate, but let me tell you, I'm a size 4 at DB, and I still have problems. Personally I think it's the store... They have great service at some of the locations, and horrible service at others. I've been to three David's Bridals and two of them were pretty good. However, their sizes run incredibly small!!! I am normally a size two, and they had me trying on 4's and 6's! AND the dresses they make all fit differently. I would say I have the problem of the dresses I want being too BIG! All of my favorites were too big. I don't have a great selection of dresses, and at the last bridal expo I went to, there was only ONE size 4, and that was the smallest size they had!

I think they make more dresses in the average sizes of about 6-12. Since the majority and the average is between the sizes of 6 and 12, they make more dresses in those sizes. It's frustrating, but it's just the way it is...

I am a fuller figured bride and I went to the House of Brides and they had a decent selection for me to try on. I went with the Bonnie Unforgettable dress #1915. It is frustrating, but in the end you will get the dress of your dreams!

Yeah, I've heard nothing but bad things about David's Bridal. I too am a plus-sized bride and I'm already stressing over the anxiety I feel when I think about going to places and trying on dresses -- it's like, "hey, I know I've packed on some pounds, but I'm still a person". Also, remember that with gowns, you usually end up getting a size one or two bigger than you wear regularly, so there's already that feeling to contend with.

I read somewhere that Alfred Angelo not only offers a great selection, but that they're one of the few companies that doesn't charge extra for larger sizes. My former supervisor got married recently and her dress was super cute -- when I vented to her about the plus-size thing, she recommended a place out in Brick, NJ (a bit of a hike for me but would be worth it to receive great service AND find a nice dress in my size) -- I'd ask around to your friends, family, co-workers and see if they have suggestions like that.

    You're not alone, girl!

I'm sorry for all those who had horrible experiences at DB. I'm one of the lucky few, it seems, since the store I went to has an amazing staff (there are two that are close to me, and I definitely chose the right one). I wear a 14 pant, and am in a 16W dress because of my 'girls'. My dress is gorgeous and yesterday I had my first appointment for alterations and loved it even more. Angela H., I wish you luck in finding your dream dress!

I have to tell you that I had the same experience when I was getting married which has prompted me to start one of the first sites for Plus Size Brides, Pretty Pear Bride: Bridal Inspiration for Plus Size Brides.
