No fondant?

Aimee R (formerly Aimee B), on March 23, 2012 at 9:15 AM Posted in Planning 0 56

Is anyone doing a cake minus fondant? I do not personally care for the taste and I can't fathom paying for something to then have it peeled off.

Anyone on board with the no fondant?

I am not doing fondant. I hate it and my baker can make buttercream look smooth. I purposely chose a cake design that could be done without it.

Yes - I'm doing a buttercream icing. They can get that just as smooth as fondant and still make a great tasing cake (even better for me since I don't like fondant lol)

Me! I nixed the cake all together because I'm not a fan of paying that much for a cake that really doesn't taste fabulous. We went with a dessert buffet instead.

Thanks ladies. I just don't like the taste of it and to just "peel" off money seems a bit wasteful.

Ugh...I HATE fondant. One of the first things that my FH and I agreed on about the cake was that there was absolutely no way that we wanted fondant.

We are doing vanilla/almond cake, with mocha buttercream and yes, fondant on the top. I like it and think it looks lovely--we tasted our cake last Sunday and it was fabulous! You may remember that an old childhood friend is making our cake. When I asked if he wanted payment now, so he could buy the supplies, he told us that the cake is his gift to us. I thought I was going to cry. We have been blessed with the most wonderful friends.

NotFroofy made our cake. She went with various varieties of buttercream on the bottom three layers, and royal icing on the top (traditional British fruit cake, that we saved for our anniversary). It was delicious!

I don't like the taste of fondant either. Our baker makes buttercream look as smooth as fondant so that's the direction we took! I can't wait for wedding cake!

We are doing fondant for structure and I want the quilted look to the cake, but if it's done professionally and not layered on thick it's not bad. My cake has to make an hour and 45 minute drive so they didn't want to do buttercream for travel purposes. And it keeps the cake moist.

I really dislike fondant. I"ve also asked the baker to cut some of the sugar out of whatever recipe she uses. Cake is too sweet.

I can't stand fondant. I've seen this trend of whipped icing done in an ombre effect, it looks yummy!
