Need Advice-Should I get a perm to help w/ wedding hair?

Cate, on February 23, 2012 at 10:16 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

I would really like to have fabulous hair for my wedding, but I am afriad that because my hair is super straight that curls won't hold up in August. DO you think getting a perm would be a good idea?

I had one before when I was in highschool... It was a loose body wave.

I think all the time about getting a perm.. I also have straight hair that doesn't hold a curl, but I am sooo scared that it will come out bad.. maybe try it now, and then if you like it, do it again for the wedding?

Ha! I posted last week about whether or not I should get highlights for the first time ever before the wedding, b/c I noticed my hair was getting darker. I'll see you at the salon! Smiley smile

I wouldn't get a perm. I think you can get the same effect by having your hair one or two days post-shampoo and sleeping in soft rollers or a non-rolling curl method the night before. One of my friends is a hairstylist, she usually recommends girls do that the night before a hairstyle.

Dont get a perm only because you dont know how your hair will react to it...I have the same problem my hair wont hold curls...my hair dresser told me not to wash my hair for 2 days to make sure its greasy which helps your hair hold a curl better

Perms are semi-permanent no pun intended, lol.

I have really straight hair and I admit its tough to keep curls in the summer but if I get it professionally done it lasts pretty long. Plus good hair products can work wonders.

No dont put a chemical, that's what stiff hairspray is for along with setting lotion. You should consider Wet Setting...

No No and more no. I wasn't even aware people had perms anymore. Smiley smile good products work wonders. Wash your hair the day before the wedding and put in a firm hold mousse. Don't wash again and you should hold. That said, make sure you get a trial to make sure.

I perm my hair. I love it! I have very straight, boring hair. I do a somewhat loose wave so that all I have to do in the morning is spray it with a little water, spritz with some spray, shake with fingers (or use a pick) and walk out the door! I keep the perm loose enough that I can blow it straight if I want.

I do my own perm. After my hair got to my shoulders and perms crested the $100 mark....I bought some rollers and an Ogilvie home perm. Rollers you can use forever, and I buy a box of perm every 6-8 months for $7. When I get my hair trimmed, all the hair stylists think I have naturally curly hair. I've perfected my perms after doing it for over 10 years! =)

I have incredibly straight hair and I can never ever EVER get my hair to stay curled (buy the time I am curling the second half of my hair, the first half is flat) but I had my hair prof. done for prom and it was still curly the next morning, just let your stylist know so she can bulk up extra haha.

But on another note I have been wanting a perm because I hate how lifeless my hair is, so jen when can you come over and use ur magic on my hair haha but seriously what kind of rollers do you use?

As a hairdresser, I say NO dont do it, cause if you dont like it you'll ruin your hair tryin to get it out and it wont come out till it grows out unless you damage your hair, and with the wedding coming up I wouldnt recommend it, but the other girls are right wash ur hair not the night before but the night before that, so for you it will be the 9th, wash it that night and try not to use conditioner but if you have to just a little. Use alot of hair spray and get a can to keep with you all day.

Try the 2 days no wash thing first long before the wedding I have supper dense straight hair and for me not washing my hair makes it worse my hair will not hold a curl to save it's life! I suggest you go for a body wave if it doesn't work you've had one before, so you already know aproximately how it will turn out but I agree with most of the girls here try everything else first! The chemical process used for perms is not very good for your hair.

I had perms growing up...my hair is very straight and would not hold curls so I did get a perm about 3 weeks before my wedding and I couldn't have been happier because it helped alot with volume and holding the curls. I only did it because I have had many perms in my life and knew what to expect from it.

I perm my hair twice a year for the last 3 years. I LOVE IT. i have really flat straight hair, it adds volume and texture. Its not a curl perm, its a wave/digital perm... if you look at my profile picture, that is how my permed hair looks just air dried. When I curl my hair with a curling iron, the curls hold REALLY well even without hairspray!

so i suggest looking into wave/digital perms. they do these at most asian hair salons (korean/japanese). its more expensive than a regular chemical perm.. but the results are significantly better. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_perm you can google "digital perm" for more pictures

here is a picture of me, my hair here is just air dried... no products, no blowdryer, just the digital perm!

Don't do it!!!!!!!!!!! Perms are not worth it. It can brutally damage your hair - especially if you don't know how your hair will react to it. Like Danielle said, if you don't like it, you can't get rid of it.

BAD IDEA! I'm a licensed hair dresser- if you don't like it honey, you are stuck with it. My adivce is when you go for your trial, mouse or gel and hairspray. My hair has a lot of trouble staying curly too and I have to do the same thing. Againgood luck sweetie. , if you don't like it, you have to let it grow out. I don't mean to burst any bubbles and if someone else knows a trick I would really love to learn a new trick to because my hair is going to half up and half down and loose curls it would be great to have another oppinion! Smiley smile good luck sweetie!

Thank you everyone! I had a perm before so I am not a stranger to it, I just want my curls to hold up on my wedding! I will have to think about it more, I know it really damages your hair but it does make it look fuller.

I have straight, fine hair so a double whammy. The last time I went to my stylist she curled my hair with a small barrel curling iron so was very curly the first day and when I woke up in the morning, all I had to do was run a brush through my hair and I still had curls though they were a bit looser. So, have a trial run with your stylist and ask her to use a small barrel iron to see if that might work. Good luck!
