Modern or Traditional?

Lynnie, on October 16, 2018 at 11:08 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 41

Wedding etiquette & traditions can give some of us the nostalgic romantic wedding feel we want, but you can't ignore the creative possibilities and ease of planning that a more modern wedding planning approach can provide!

Which wedding traditions are you choosing to to skip or revamp, and which tried-and-true traditions can you not imagine getting married without?

Totally modern with food stations, highboy and cocktail tables, lounge areas...

Traditional with most things, but we put a modern "spin" on a few. The ceremony music, the wedding vows, we're doing a first look, and we're not doing a honeymoon (at least not in year 1). We also are half and half with the cake - cake to serve about 100, but dessert table for everyone who doesn't want cake.

Definitely modern. I have never been that girl that dreams of my wedding day so I certainly don't care to adhere to traditional standards and expectations. My wedding will be on Mother's Day and will be a family brunch event.

More modern approach. Small ceremony. 20-25 guests.

Pretty traditional: Staying apart the night before, no first look, formal processional with live musicians but NOT the bridal march, cocktail hour, sit down dinner and dancing. We put our own flavor into a lot of things, and eliminated a few like the bouquet and garter toss.

Far from traditional. The ceremony is direct kin only and the reception will be up to 65 people the following day. We're also planning on food trucks; an online invitation system (with paper for older adults and keepsakes); succulents & dried herbs instead of flowers; tea-length retro- inspired dress, and the venue is a new contemporary art gallery.

A little bit of both, mostly Traditional but a lot of it will end up being Modern. I wouldn't call it either, it's more like "our style" of wedding.

We are going to Gatlinburg, TN and going to the Sugarland Chapel with just out close family and then coming home that next Saturday and having a reception with other family and friends... so for the reception we are having it more of a mix because we are not doing it like most.

As an overall, I think most of us like to consider ourselves modern. But I think my wedding had more traditional elements than I consciously planned for or realized. Interesting threads to go through.
