Mailing labels - Tacky or acceptable?

6 years later, on April 4, 2012 at 4:07 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33

Okay....my handwriting is bad, VERY bad. Is it acceptable to put mailing labels on my invites or must I go through the trouble of paying someone to write them?

Could you print directly onto the envelopes? We aren't doing calligraphy, but I think we will try to print on our envelopes.

We were totally going to do labels but it looked really bad on our red metallic envelopes so we ended up handwriting everything.

Lots of invites we have gotten have labels. We are using the computer to print directly on the envelopes since both FH and I don't have the greatest writing.

I was going to handwrite, then I was informed that my save-the-dates, which I did handwrite looked barely legible and some other language =). Sooo, then I was going to print on the envelope but somehow got side tracked and my MOH generously offered to print labels for us. So labels we used, b/c at this point I've tried my best and the only ettiquette I'm really paying attention to is the stuff that maximizes my guests comfort. Ie seats at the ceremony, plenty of good food and drinks, shuttle service etc. So far no one has protested the labels and it looks like they've arrived at about half of their intended destinations.

Edited to add: We used clear labels and a cursive font, but in pics it still looks like a label. If you have the time try printing directly on the envelope, I think that looks really nice.

I'm not a fan, I think labels are for junk mail. Lots of people do it though. It's not like people are going to defriend you over labels. Smiley smile

If you're worried about printing or handwriting, here's another really awesome alternative - there were a bunch of threads about doing fake calligraphy that last few months and this is the original one.

I got inspired by FM Ohler and used the "light box" technique - I printed all the names/addresses in a fancy font on computer paper, took FH's ipad and brightened the screen all the way up, set a pyrex dish on top, then lined up the addresses under the envelopes and traced everything with a gelly roll pen. E - A - S - Y. As long as your envelopes aren't too dark. I dimmed the lights and that helped a lot, our envelopes are really thick.

You can sort of see how they turned out in this pic. People totally thought we hired a calligrapher. Smiley smile

I ordered wrap around labels from a seller on Etsy. It was $10.00 for her to design. She sent me the digital file and all I have to do is print them and cut them. It is not a must have but I thought they were a nice touch. I refused to handwrite them because my handwriting has dissolved to scribble scrabble over the years.

If you're going to do labels, Kimberly's labels are the way to go. Smiley smile

Those don't look like bulk office supplies. They're super cute and I love that damask pattern!

Kimberly you seriously post the cutest stuff. You have really good taste.

I am going to do labels, but I am going to have them printed with our colors, so they aren't just white. If they look taky, I'm just going to run the envelopes through the printer, I am so not writting out 50 addresses.

Kimberly L. - have those labels been approved by the post office? You might want to take a sample down there and have them check. I know it sounds silly, but I used to work for 2 different companies that did nothing but mailings for clients and the post office is actually very picky about the placement of the 'To' address and the 'return' address. If it wraps as shown, it's on the wrong side (they need to be more to the right) of the envelope and you might have problems.

I used the Avery clear labels and they looked just fine. I bought the larger labels, so I could make the calligraphic font larger to look as thought I hand wrote them.

I guess it all depends on the look you are going for. We had a laid back wedding, so those details didn't matter.

I did the exact same thing that Mrs. Carole did and my wedding it very laid back as well. I think if your wedding has a casual vibe then the clear labels are just fine but if you want a more formal look to your wedding (and a free afternoon) then I would suggest the light box calligraphy the other girls mentioned or the pretty wrap around labels. It all depends on how much you care about the invites and what kind of vibe your wedding has.

I used Avery Clear Lables too. No way was I handwriting 113 addresses. I'd still be working on them over a month later.

I don't think anyone is judging me by the way my invitation is addressed. I also used labels on the STDs, but I did postcards and it's hard to cram print into the small box you get on a postcard.

I love those wrap around ones, and wish I would have known about them. I still would have printed the entire thing on a label to put on the envelope though.

We are doing white labels (our envelopes are white) i like it because we have used the same 2 fonts for everything wedding related- so it just keeps the theme going. Not that anyone will notice what font we use. But i like it.
