Mailing labels - Tacky or acceptable?

6 years later, on April 4, 2012 at 4:07 PM

Okay....my handwriting is bad, VERY bad. Is it acceptable to put mailing labels on my invites or must I go through the trouble of paying someone to write them?

As long as you asked... but you won't like my answer...

Times sure have changed. Back when... it was considered VERY tacky to use labels. I think any wedding consultant will tell you that, but in the age of computers and labels, everyone is doing cheap and easy. Heck, even schools all over the Nation are dropping "cursive" writing, because no one uses it anymore... sad.

The time spent writing out addresses will be noticed by your guests as a "touch of class". There used to be vendors who used calligraphy, and offered it as a service... they are either gone or fading away. Again, sad!

The comment "I don't want to write out 50 envelopes" reflects the "microwave" style of thinking. Fast, quick, easy is not classy... many will view it as "lazy". Wrong or right, that's how it will be perceived. Ever heard this comment: "easy is sleezy"? Trust me, that's what they will think.

I disagree Tyrone. No one is going to remember that I used labels. I certainly wouldn't care if I received an invitation with a label. People are busy, and if they want to be offended by my use of labels on the envelope then they don't need to come to my wedding. I'll save the money for their meal. If they think I'm lazy they can come spend a day in my shoes, going to class, work, and planning this wedding. I am far from lazy thank you very much. My grades in school are far more important then the way I address wedding invitations.

Also, gone are the days where the brides parents pay for everything. more often than not, the brides are doing everything. Lord forbid that we try to save some time and provide legibility for our guests. It's a great way to cut costs (because again, the engage couple is more than likely providing for their own wedding, if not a huge chunk of it) by not hiring someone to do calligraphy. For my STD's, I'm planning on using labels (insert gasp here). How many wedding invites/STD's have you received? What's your first though? I bet it's not "Omg, she used a LABEL, how tacky!" Go with what works best for you, your budget, and your time. At the end of the day, if they really care that much about using a mailing label, you probably don't want them at your wedding.

We are doing the labels even though my husband has a beautiful handwriting, I just can't see having him write each address out

    Thanks Saleemah!

I have to say I agree with Tyrone's general point. Although you lost me at "easy is sleezy".

It also makes me sad that calligraphy and stationery in general is a dying art. My mama drilled it into my head that little touches like cards and nice handwriting make people feel special, like you actually took some time to make something nice for them that they don't see every day. But so many people don't even learn how to write nicely now since they learn how to type so early. Times are a'changin.
