I may have to work on my wedding day

Megglesleslye, on October 24, 2016 at 7:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 114

I was approved to take my vacation time in December for the wedding. Well we are very short staffed and our third shift staff quit. No notice. So my supervisor calls to tell me the days I took off in December will probably not be covered. I work every day. I haven't had a day off since gosh I don't even know. Has this happened to anyone?

That is some bs, talk to your boss calmly explaining how you are using your time off. You made financial obligations based on your approved time off. Sorry this is happening to you. Good luck.

Oh no. That is so wrong that you have to work on your wedding day. I can't believe your supervisor will not give you one day off.

I did have to work Friday before my wedding but it was only for a few hours to do a very important shipment and I went back to work right after the wedding.

I really hope you can get it off.

Can they not hire more employees in the next 40 days? Do they understand you took off for YOUR OWN WEDDING?

Do you work every day at just 1 job?? Because that doesn't sound right.

Wow I can't believe they would put that pressure on you. I am sure it will figure itself out. If not, call in sick.

@SnowQueen I am so mad right now, I explained and she said if no one is hired there was nothing she could do.

Take this to your HR department if they're really not budging on this. How ridiculous

I would be out of there faster than you can say Bye Felicia. Seriously though, who wants a job that you cant even get guaranteed time off for your wedding. What are you going to do if you decide to have a baby or a family member falls ill?

eta: where do you work or what do you do?

Can you maneuver worth coworkers to cover each other's shifts? can your suoervisor hire a temp or agency?

I'm a nurse and this was a concern for me and Co workers attending the wedding. I put my request in already for time off next year for the wedding. at any point my boss can renig esp with short staffing.

can i ask what you do? is it something where you can beg other people to help cover your shifts eta: when I requested time off, even though it is a year in advance, my boss was hesitant because of staffing issues. When she asked where are was going, & I said my honeymoon, she laughed and said oh well that's different.. So just make sure your boss know is that it really is for a wedding, your wedding

@Sabrina I do. I've been pulling up to 22 hours almost daily. Saturday and Sunday are technically my days off but I've worked every weekend for months because of people quiting and others asking off.

I would talk to someone in HR or someone higher up. In my company, once your time-off is approved then that's it. There's no taking it away.

@judi I work with mentally ill and disabled clients. The third shift staff who quit was actually the one who was covering my shifts. But since she quit, my supervisor says she has asked around and no one will work it.

That's crazy. If the time off has been approved then that's their problem, not yours.

What do you do for work? That is insane! If they have approved your leave, it's their problem! What will they do if you don't show up?!

ETA: Read your reply. Wow. I'd be fuming.

Worst case scenario, you don't show up that day and they fire you. That would be horrible but who wants to work for a company like that anyway? I'd start looking for a new job ASAP.

@JamieLeigh I think if I don't show up honestly with such short staff I would be written up. Not fired.

What?! I'd be livid. When you request days off and get approved, is it in writing?
