You can start as soon as you want- I’ve been planning mine for about 3 years! Early on though, a lot is theoretical. Design ideas on Pinterest to get an idea of what you and your future partner would like, discuss how many guests you’re looking at inviting, maybe even tour some venues. Just keep in mind that venues only book so far out (mine was a year out), and until you have that venue booked I wouldn’t actually buy or book anything else.

I was planning before I met DH.

Only because I had attended some questionable events. As such, I had started making notes and selected a color.
Also, purchased some Wedding items (Save the Dates, 💜🎀, 🎂 Topper, Bridal party 🎁s) with my Mom during several craft store runs.
Therefore, she was “there” and helped with the planning even though she never had a chance to meet him.

You have to do what’s best for you.

Maybe start making a list of what you need.

Or, create a 🔒ed Pinterest Wedding board. That way, only YOU can see it.

I got engaged July 19 and started planning immediately.. my wedding is June 21 and I already have my venue booked... the more time you have the less the stress.. I am DIYing just about everything so I wanted to give myself ample time where I wouldn’t feel stressed and turn into a bridezilla..

You can start planning as soon as you want. Many venues and high demand vendors like caterers, photographers, and bands book more than a year out, so I definitely don't think its too soon to start planning a July 2021 wedding.

I'd recommend finding and booking a venue first, because the venue's availability can influence your exact date and will also impact all of your other wedding details. After that, you can start looking at dresses and caterers and any other vendors that are a high priority for you. For example, photography is really important to me so that was one of the first vendors I wanted to square away after we had our date and venue selected.

You'll want to give yourself at least 8-10 months lead time if you are planning on buying a new dress from a bridal boutique, because many dresses take at least that long to come in and be fitted. I'd recommend starting dress shopping about 12 months ahead of time, that way you have time to look and don't feel pressured to pick something right away.

We are having a 9 month engagement, so it definitely can be done in a shorter amount of time, but I think it's worth getting your bigger vendors (venue, food, music, photography) sorted early that way you have plenty of options to choose from. There are things you don't want to do too early (for example, I wouldn't dress shop 3 years out because bridal fashions change and my weight also fluctuates a bit) but those big vendors you can start looking at right now.
