How short is too short of an engagement?

Stephanie, on April 14, 2011 at 3:06 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 48

Quite a few people from FH's side have been shocked when we tell them we are getting married on July 1, 2012. They keep saying how soon it is and blah blah. We have been together for almost 7 years and have two children together. My thinking on the whole thing is -It's about damn time! I figured about 2 years is a decent amount of time for an engagement, but I wanted it in summer so it'll be 1 1/2 years. My family, on the other hand, thinks its perfectly acceptable. So what is an acceptable amount of time for an engagement? Are they just crazy? Well, they are crazy, but that's besides the point lol Smiley tongue

    Stephanie,

First off, I think that an engagement of 1.5 years is perfectly acceptable! Most engagements that I see with my lovely brides last about 1-2 years so that they can do all of the planning for their weddings.

Go with your heart - it's your big day, so don't let anyone sway your decisions.

    Congratulations!

My engagement will only be 1 1/2 years and we were only together 6 months before he proposed! Geez how much longer to you want to wait?

That is not to short. My plan was 1 yr and looks like it will be turning into 5 months if we can pull it off financially!

Mine will only be 6 months (what would they think of me). That is a totally normal time frame. It makes me wonder how long they expected you to be engaged for?

I was engaged for 6 1/2 months (will be celebrating 24 years of marriage this summer!) and my niece (the 5/29/11 wedding date) will be engaged for 4 1/2 months when she becomes a Mrs. ;-) You've known each other for years, have children together...an engagement period is to serve 2 purposes: 1.) Get to know each other well and make sure you're ready for marriage and 2.) give you time to put the wedding together. You've already done #1...now it's time for the 2nd part!

I would hate to think of what they would say about my 8 month engagement! I don't like long engagements unless there is some financial or situational reason for it. I wouldn't want to go out more than a year unless I had to! I am 170 days away and I am dying for it to go by faster!!!

I think they are confused. I mean mines was (almost) a year (got engaged on 7/24/10 and we wanted close to engagement date). So to me, that is plenty of time!!!

I have the opposite problem. We will have been engaged for a little over 11/2 years when we get married and a lot of our relatives and friends crabbed that it was too long of an engagement. I think it is whatever your comfortable with! We had to wait so we could save $$

I think the people telling you that's a short amount of time are being sarcastic? When I told someone I've been engaged for a year she was like "Do you have a date set yet or what?!?!" like I had been engaged forever.

Honestly? I think a year and a half is insanely long - engagements used to be between 3 and 6 months, and the general advice was to go as short as possible, as engagements and wedding planning can be exhausting for the families involved.

I understand people need to save up, finish school, etc, so I'm not saying all long engagements are bad. But for the most part, I think it's usually best to plunge right in.

We chose a nine-month engagement (got engaged on our first anniversary), because we wanted winter to be over (my boss' wedding was ruined by Snowpocalypse). But we didn't want to wait too long, and we wanted to stay out of the way of March Madness.

We were together a year and a half and have a one year engagement (almost exactly to the day). Your engagement is plenty long enough! Someone is always going to complain no matter what Smiley sad

I think the majority of engagements are 1-1.5 years long....FH and I are taking it REALLY slow, we will have been engaged for almost 4 years when we get married!! But its what worked for us, we are both in school, and it just made sense!

WOW, seriously you have been together for 7 years and with 2 kids yes I would say its about damn time to make it official. Its not too short and I cant believe that anyone would want to question that. Do your thing and dont worry about other peoples opinion if you and FH are ready then thats all that matters.

I actually had the opposite reaction from people. when FH and I got engaged, we had just under two years until the big day. we actually changed the date to sooner (so then we just had about a year and a half) and i thought that was such a long time to wait! and so did everyone else. when we told people that we weren't getting married for 1.5 years, many people's reactions were like "then why bother even getting engaged?!?" so anyway, not too short at all! Smiley smile
