How safe is it to buy a wedding dress online?

shjelt, on November 5, 2012 at 5:21 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

Im getting married in June of 2013 and ive started to browse around for wedding dress salons around my area and there are not that many. The problem with those that are close is that they don't have a huge variety. Im young so i guess i would be considered a princess bride right? anyway, there are some dresses that i found from ifitdress.com with beautiful wedding dresses and at a really great price, but ive never bought anything online so far (much less a wedding dress!) do u think its safe? i need advice. please be genuine and respectful. thanx

I wouldn't do it. You can't even really contact them and it appears to be a knock off site. The return policy sucks too. These are all things to check out prior to purchasing online.

    You can check out:

    http://www.bestbridalprices.com/

    that is a legit site

I think like tiedaknot says check out everything on the site first, return policy, contact info (maybe even attempt to contact them). Be really careful. Not to say you can't purchase a dress online, just do your background research.

Without even looking, I can tell you that's a Chinese knock off site. Here are some posts with horror stories from brides using these kinds of sites:

If you are on a budget, there are several legitimate pre-owned dress sites: RecycledBride, Bravo Bride, OnceWed, PreOwnedWeddingDresses.com, or the classifieds on Wedding Bee or Project Wedding.

David's Bridal often has their $99 sale, and many of their dresses are offered at low prices. Sample sales can also save you money, and even department stores carry some bridal gowns these days. Many bridesmaid dresses can be bought in white or ivory, so that's another way to go.

BestBridalPrices.com is a legitimate wedding dress site that can save you some money, and give you an idea of the prices for dresses.

Finally, welcome to WW!! Sorry to throw so much at you, we just really want to warn brides against making a mistake -- there have been a few ladies happy with their online purchases, but if you are on a budget, that can be a risk to take. You'd be unlikely to get your money back and you could end up with a dress that you can't even wear.

I hope you'll stick around and update your avatar (the rings) so we can remember you and help you more in the future! This post tells you how to do that and more about the forums: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/new-to-the-weddingwire-forums-please-read-before-you-post/b433c40c1a62b96a.html

Don't buy a dress online. The only exception I would make to that is David's Bridal. If you try on a dress in the store and it's not quite your size but you can buy the right size on their website than do that. My sister did that for her wedding and her dress was fabulous!

I wouldn't do it personally. I thought about it too at first...But once I tried on dresses and noticed my size was drastically different for every designer, I knew it would be a bad idea. Spend the little bit extra to get what you really like! I know the prices may look good, but in reality they're probably just going to steal your money or you're going to get a poor quality dress! Good luck!

Don't do it. It will not look like the photo (which is ripped off), it won't fit right and you won't be able to do anything about it. Check out consignment shops first, Bridal Garden, etc, but not anything Chinese please.

I saw my dress online through the designer and bought it through an authorized retailer. My dress arrived only 3 days before my wedding...it looked exactly like the picture...and no alterations were needed (I was lucky). Now I am an event planner, and grant it, I would not necessarily recommend what I did to others. However, to answer your question about it being safe...yes, depending on where you buy it from. I saw my dress many years ago on www.marysbridal.com and absolutely loved it at first site! Got it for around $1500, but I know they had other dresses for much less (and more). Before ordering anything online though just make sure you know what type of merchant it is. Checking reviews will help. If the price is too good to be true, then it probably is. As also suggested for budget shoppers, DB's has nice dresses during their $99 sale. Consignment shops are great too.

    Best Wishes,
