How much did you pay for your wedding cake?

Amanda, on August 30, 2016 at 11:55 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 63

We are getting some pretty expensive quotes ($1000!) for a cake for about than 70-75 guests. Is that normal? How much did you pay/are you paying? This has probably been my biggest WTF moment in the planning process... So shocked to see how much a friggin cake costs! Even sheet cake was quoted at over $6 per serving!

Wow, I think that's a high quote! I'm sure it depends on where you're located and what you're looking for too--fondant vs buttercream, intricate designs, etc. do you have an inspiration pic, love to see one!

Our cake is 3 tiers for 55-60 ppl and we're paying about $350.

We did a small cake and cupcakes covered in pink and white rosettes for $325. But, I'm not a big cake person. Totally what I saved on.

Paying $465 for 6-6" carrot cakes (used as centerpieces) and 1-6" gluten free cake. Seemed reasonable to me. Eta: we have 43 guests

Our 3 tier cake and grooms cake will be enough for almost 200 and it's only $600 for both including the delivery charge.

I paid $66 at my local grocery store for four assorted 'European' style cakes. We had about 50 people at our wedding. I also had cookies and pie.

My cake is covered in my venue package, but when we visited the baker he quoted us $800 for a 5 tier that feeds well over 220. It is a simple red velvet cake lightly iced with cream cheese frosting, I can't remember if we had a filling (I don't think so).

We were between $1200 and $1300 for a 5 tier to feed 225 (not counting the top tier)...and that was with a small discount because we booked during an open house when they were offering the promo. It really all depends on so many factors though like flavors, icing, how intricate the design is and your location. Other things to consider too are if delivery is included (it was in my price) and is a cake stand included (that was not included in my price, but they were available for an additional fee). I found from many bakers that even the shape counted in the price...square tiers were more expensive than round...go figure Smiley smile

It really depends on your area, the style of the cake and budget.

I did a dessert bar with A two tier cake. The cake alone was around $250.

That seems really high. Are you looking at some specialty cake with extremely detailed design? And are you sure you're only feeding 70 people? For 70 people it should be a three or four tiered cake. Where is the bulk of the cost coming from? Have you asked the baker?

My first quote from a bakery on our venues preferred vender list was about 1200. We ended up going with a bakery who's owner went to school with FSIL and we're paying 577 for a four tier buttercream and fondant cake with key lime filling. Yummmm!

    I'd say shop around!

We really just want a simple semi-naked buttercream cake. No special designs, no fondant, no crazy shapes, no unique flavors... No muss no fuss. I like lemon cake, FH likes chocolate. The lowest quote we've gotten thus far has still been over $700. We have received quotes from about 4 or 5 different bakeries. We haven't contacted any super fancy bakeries, either. I just don't understand why it costs so much. My dad recommended contacting bakeries and not mentioning the word "wedding" but instead saying "event" to see if the quotes go down. We are now also considering several smaller round cakes and cupcakes instead of the traditional tiered cakes, in the hopes that that will cut the price. I just can't imagine paying over $500 for a dang cake when we're not even having 100 guests!

This is the type of cake we are hoping to get. As you can see, very simple!

@Amanda, that's an insane price for a simple cake for 75 people. Where are you located?

We paid about $435 for 100 kronuts (in lieu of cake), this included boxes in case guests wanted to take theirs home instead of eat it right away.

I originally wanted individual cakes per guest what were covered in fondant with black fondant ribbon and was quoted $1200 for 60 pieces, it really depends on the style and the materials that are used to achieve it.

I'm in Baltimore, 60-70 people, - 350 for a 3 tier cake, half sheet cake, custom topper, 6 gluten free cupcakes, and 8 pies.
