How much did you pay for your wedding cake?

@A&W, we are in the SF Bay Area. We are getting married just north of SF in Marin County. I even sent photos of these cakes to the bakers and those were still the quotes we received.

We got a quote of $450 for a fondant covered cake with a design for about 85 people.

It really depends on the style. Did you show her inspiration pics? Are you looking for basic flavors or more exotic ones? Are you looking for buttercream or fondant? Embellishments like live or sugar flowers, piping, hand painting? All of that will affect your price.

We are doing a cake buffet. 1 2-layer cake and 5 regular cakes. All different flavors. All with simple frosting, decorated with fresh greenery and flowers. We're spending about $500 for 90ppl including delivery.

Ours is $444 including delivery and tax for a three tier buttercream, naked cake. It'll serve 100 people. Those estimates are extremely high in my opinion, but I guess it depends where you live.

We are spending about $120 for 3 fudgey chocolate cakes that each serve 20 pieces and one 3 tiered white cake that serves 60. Our wedding is about 100 people so this provides a little extra.

We are getting our cakes from Sam's Club because it's cheaper and we are out of state and couldn't do any tasting where our wedding is located because we don't have time or money to travel that often. We figured if we tasted Sam's cakes locally, they'd be identical to what we'd find in the location of our wedding and it would be safe.

We paid close to $400 for a 2 tier cake but we ordered it plain and then we added cascading flowers from our florists that were $60.00.

We had quotes between $800-1200 from large popular bakeries, luckily we live outside the city in San Diego so we were able to find a small family run bakery. We got a simple 85 person 3 tier cake for $400. But prepare for large quotes from any bakeries that are widely popular that have a lot of overhead costs like large fancy restaurant, marketing, etc.

@Tallah, I'm not sure I understand your question about being sure that we're "only feeding 70 people." What exactly do you mean by that? I'm really confused by that comment and have no idea what you mean. If you mean to say we may be miscounting our guests, we are not. Our guest list tops out at exactly 72 if every single guest attends the wedding. We are assuming at least 1-2 people won't attend. However, in order to be prepared, we actually got quotes for 80 servings instead of 75. Still pricey in my opinion...

Wow... You guys listing the prices of your cakes are just reiterating why I didn't go that route! I didn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a cake that nobody was going to eat. Nobody complained about the 4 cakes I had. I had tiramisu, lemon cake, strawberry cake, and a vanilla/chocolate cake.

I'm in MN and paying $5/slice. We're estimating 150 guests so about $750 total.

Also we have been contacting mostly small bakeries, not chains or large bakeries. The only larger bakery chain we contacted was Susie Cakes but they didn't actually give us a quote. Every other bakery we contacted was a small business.

@Amanda, okay, that makes a little more sense now. It's a much more expensive area than where I live. $1000 is still crazy, though. Maybe you could look into grocery stores. A lot of them make wedding cakes, and they're pretty cheap. I don't know if you have Publix near you, but their cake is fantastic.

ETA: Also, have you contacted anyone outside of the city?

Don't automatically assume the large/famous bakeries are automatically the most expensive. I wasn't originally going to do a tasting with the bakery i ended up picking since the owner (who decorates the wedding cakes) has won a few tv cooking competitions (cupcake wars and cake wars) and it actually ended up being one of the lowest quotes and their cake is delicious! I'm doing a simple cake, 3 flavors, with 2 sugar succulents and a sugar rose.

@A&W, yeah I knew this area would be pricey but I didn't think it would be THIS pricey! So far, we have contacted bakeries in the surrounding area but not in SF, because living my whole life about 30 minutes south I know most things double in price as soon as you cross that county line. So far, we have contacted bakeries north of SF (closer to our venue) and also a couple bakeries south of SF as well. I'm still contacting places so hopefully we get a quote that is more within our budget!

For mine I am looking at about $300 with delivery and setup for a 2 tier cake and like 6 or 7 dozen cupcakes

We're going to our local Walmart/ Sam's Club and getting a 2-tier cake and approx. 96 cupcakes for roughly $100-$120.
