How many hours is your wedding?

Mrs Lilow, on January 4, 2011 at 4:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 40

I've had wedding planners tell me the weddings that go til midnight are mostly empty by 11 anyway. Is 6 hours the standard? Thats what I'm doing anyone doing more or less?

My wedding is going to be 5 hours. We could do 6, but it will be an additional charge. The vendor coordinator told us about how the weddings usually run and said that 5-6 hours is plenty of time for the entire wedding and reception.

Our ceremony and reception is going to be at the same place and starts at 5:30 and is ending at 12:00.

Our at-home reception was 5 hours, and was mostly empty by 4. However, I think they tend to last longer if they start with a cocktail hour, then a seated dinner. Since ours was heavy apps and open bar all night, there weren't as many "events" to get people to stay.

Ours is starting at 5pm, and we have it reserved until 10pm. But we can add hours on at the very last minute if we want to, at $500 per additional hour. Maybe your venue can offer something like this?

I think we wrapped up around midnight in the hotel suite, but it might have been a bit later. There was a lot of travel, though--ceremony at 6 at Valley of Fire, followed by dinner at a picnic area there, then back to the hotel so we really got started in the suite at 9.

We haven't booked anything but we're hoping to start around 11a.m. and end around 4:30p.m (maybe even 4). So...5 or so hours. That will include ceremony, reception and everything inbetween.

Ours will be starting at either 3:30pm or 4:00pm and go until 10:00pm (Ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception all at the same location. No time in between.)

I had my wedding and reception all at one place and we had the venue for 5 hours (from 4 til 9). At first both DH and I thought that wasn't enough time and that we'd for sure be buying an extra hour. The planner at the venue said 90% of the time 5 hours is more than enough. She was right, by 8:30 most of my guests had left. Now granted I did have my wedding on a Sunday, but the following day was a holiday for all the schools and most of the people I invited.

We're doing 4 hours, with the option for guests to join us for an after-party at the hotel.

Well, our ceremony started at 3. And we left the dance at 2:30 AM. LOL and there was still people hanging out, even after the music was shut off. We were ushered out, I was trying to stay and clean a little and what not. But I got shnit from everyone...Guess that had something better in mind for me to do on our wedding night Smiley winking

That being said, a wedding taht runs that long in this area is not uncommon. Our hall rental ran from Sat to Sunday, with no time restrictions. Our liqour licence allowed us to serve till 1 AM and consume until 2 AM.

I think the reception norm is 5-6 hours. On 5 hour affairs, where there is a cocktail hour and dinner, the open bar shuts down for dinner. So, you have 4 hours of open bar. In a 6 hour event, there would be 5 hours. I have never been to a wedding in all of my 49 years where people cleared out earlier. Usually, we are all looking to go elsewhere to continue the party.

Our ceremony and reception are in the same B&B that all of our guests are staying at, so the ending time is pretty much open ended. The ceremony begins at 4:30. Cocktails and Appies are 5:00 - 6:00. Intros, First Dance and Toast are from 6:00 - 6:30. Dinner is from 6:30- 7:30. The party starts at 7:30 and should end at 1:00 a.m. or until the DJ(a guest) passes out, which ever happens first.

4 hours was plenty for us. I guess I can only imagine a reception lasting 6 hours or longer with good entertainment, the right crowd (not too many elderly or toddlers), good food, stunning MC, and free flowing booze, and amazing comfy venue.

We paid for the extra hour (total 6 hours) at the venue so that we would have setup/tear down time for the dj and decorations(centerpieces and stuff) so we wouldn't be rushing too much.
