How do I say this without sounding cheap? :)

Lala, on April 5, 2012 at 8:44 AM Posted in Planning 0 38

We are having a beach wedding with outdoor reception. I know some people think using plastic at a wedding is horrendous. But with our laid back and casual feel I think it will be fine. What I'm trying to figure out is how to get people to reuse their wine glasses. We're getting plastic ones (but they are nice....not the kind where the bottom comes off). *Is* that cheap?! lol We will have 2 bars set up and all wine, beer and liquor will come from there (ie. no wine bottles sitting on tables). Is it tacky to ask people to use the same wine glass? If I was a guest, I don't think I would really care. I was thinking of putting using a small chalkboard at the bar with a catchy little phrase. Thoughts? Opinions? Help on figuring out how to say it? TIA

Wine charms with a way to distinguish the glasses would help. I think it could be difficult to implement though. For instance if someone started with wine but now wants beer to they keep two glasses or just rinse out the wine glass and put beer in it?

I've seen weddings on off beat bride do this successfully with coffee mugs, people are just asked to re-use their cup for whatever they are drinking. I'm not great with crafty signs though, but I'm sure someone will have a phrase for you!

You could also do this =).

I agree with Sami...if you give them some kind of charm or 'glass tag' it would help. Maybe just have fun colored sharpies there so they can write their name on their glass.

If you have a wedding planner or an MC, have then let the guest knows that there are two bars for their enjoyment, but please hold onto their cups for refills. Also let the bartenders know. Tell them when guests arrive for a refill, have the bartender simply ask them for their cup

I like the other ladies suggestions -- how about put up a cute sign with a poem about reusing their wine glass to be "green"? I'm really no good at coming up with cute phrases so maybe some other ladies have an idea??

@Sami.....we'll have different cups for the liquor, beer and non alcoholic drinks. And we have tons of those! It's just that the wine glasses are so freaking expensive so I hate to buy a ton of extra and then have only half the people drinking wine. Although I suppose that would just give me an excuse to drink more wine. "But honey, we have to use these wine glasses somehow!" Smiley winking

I do already have chalkboard paint........

Ohhh you have plenty of other plastic drinkware but not wine glasses, yeah that's just going to be confusing. I look forward to the other ladies suggestions.

Edited to add: As someone renting drinkware I feel your pain, I'm renting approximately 2.5 glasses per person of each type (water, wine, beer) plus a champagne toasting flute. It works out to be like $700 for glasses... oh and I got this cute idea to do soup shooters... more glassware.

You can purchase wine glass charms. Place them on the bar in a basket with a sign that says something like:

These are for you to place on your glass

Because they are limited we have to ask

You to hold on to it, don't let it out of your sight

So you will have your glass to enjoy wine tonight.

I hope it's not to corny, something I just thought of quickly.

Well, I guess I am too late Smiley smile.. but I think what Kimberly said is great... although the chalkboard paint and writing their name could work too, since you already have the paint..

I am the kind of person who loves having red solo cups and writing my name on them, so maybe I am just tacky Smiley smile

I would go with the chalkboard, put out a basket of colored chalk.. and put something like Kimberly said, but altered

Please write your name on your glass ,

Because they are limited we have to ask

For you to hold on to it, don't let it out of your sight

So you will have your glass to enjoy wine tonight.

also, after 2 glasses, it will become habit and nobody will even realize they are using the same glass. I mean, when you go to a party, do you get a new glass each time? No. Even some restaurants use the same glass throughout the night and just refill it (always if you buy a bottle)

You are worrying too much, and things will be fine!

    I love it Kimberly.

Lala...You are not being cheap at all. One of the reasons we rented glassware was because it was not much of a price difference for us.

I don't think the chalk board paint is going to work on plastic glasses.

Thanks, CKJL and Carole! Making me feel better!! Carole I was amazed that it was so close in price as well! The only reason we aren't renting the glassware is because I can just see people out on the beach barefoot, breaking the glass (how would glass break on sand, you ask? Idk....but it would happen! lol), then cutting their foot and so on and so on! Yes, as CKJL said, I worry too much! Smiley smile

Hmm, never thought of that, I have never actually used chalkboard paint. Let's see what google says.

    Found this...

Chalkboard spray paint can be used on wood, plastic, metal and glass. It is also very durable and washable.
