Go fund me for a wedding? UPDATE: it got worse!

Blue one 4, on August 12, 2014 at 4:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 84

A person from high school recently got engaged she immediately reached out to me to see how much I would charge to do her hair for the weekend. Then the next day she set up a gofundme account for her wedding " asking for donations in leu of gifts at the wedding." She has proceeded to share it every 2 hours on Facebook for the last 4 days. I'm not one to lecture on etiquette but this particular situation really struck me as slightly beyond the level of acceptability... I know I have been very blessed with that my finances did allow me to have a wonderful wedding but even if they didn't i was already planning a court house ceremony followed by a backyard reception as a backup and would never have fathomed asking for money from anyone...

Thoughts?

    Super tacky.

I didn't mind it for Rigby at all. That poor girl has went through heck trying to plan her big day!! But as for from day one of planning and just because you couldn't afford it. No. Not cool.

I'm surprised someone hasn't told her to stop posting it. She obviously doesn't realize what she's doing is rude and tacky.

The worst part is she shares it every 2 hours. My sister is getting married this weekend. All of her fb post have been "I want giftcards to a tattoo shop for wedding gifts please" but yet she has been texting my mom saying she doesn't like her fh and doesn't want to marry him. -_-

I'm with you! I can't even think about asking anyone for money or to fund us for our wedding or honeymoon. We're not even having a registry.. if people want to "gift" us money.. that's different.

I'm hoping I didn't encourage it b/c when she told me that she wasn't sure she had the finances to pay the entire amount for her hair I did offer to knock off half as part of her wedding gift... I was just trying to be nice and help an old acquaintance out .... Never thought she'd take that as a que to beg money from everyone smh

Kind of feel sorry for her, but constantly posting about her quest for free money is really TACKY! I hope she didn't expect you to do her hair for free. As Dave Ramsey would say, she needs to get out and deliver some pizzas!

Oh no, no, no...girlfriend needs to get a second and/or third job or have a courthouse wedding. I would never ask or expect others to donate money to finance my wedding just because I couldn't afford what I wanted. Oh hell no.

I have a friend getting married next month and she is registered with Honeyfund and I actually had fun choosing what I was going to get for her because it was like I was sending her out on a trip (I contributed to their ziplining trip in Hawaii). That being said - it is extremely tacky to continuously advertise where you're registered, whether it be something like gofundme or honeyfund or a more traditional registry - either way its like you're begging for gifts or worse, for money. IMO, mention your registry once (on a shower invite or website) and when people specifically ask, anything more and it becomes begging.

I agree Date Twin, that is not cool. I'm sure we can all relate to wanting certain things for our weddings, but letting some stuff go because of budget. I'm still having a beautiful wedding but I have worked very hard to save, be creative and DIY what I can and also live within my means.

I would die of shame if I ever set up a GoFundMe page.
