Extremely uncomfortable wedding

Del, on February 13, 2017 at 8:49 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 141

I posted earlier about going to a wedding in which we were expected to pay in cash for own dinners. I have now returned from that wedding.

It sucked.

The vibe was so bad. During the cocktail hour, while the bride and groom were taking pictures, people went from subtly bitchy ("Nice dress she had on. Bet it was expensive") to outright angry ("This is just wrong, right? Everyone agrees this is wrong?") in record time. By the time the couple showed up, everyone was pretty obviously in a pissy mood.

We ordered. One woman loudly asked her partner if he had brought enough money for her to get the scallops. At one point, the bride urged a guest to get more wine and she just flat out said, "I can't. I didn't bring enough cash."

Around dessert, which only about a quarter of the people ordered, they passed around a collection jar and asked for any donations we might feel like making. That is not a joke; that is a thing that happened. It got passed along about three guests with no one putting money in. Then someone dropped in a few coins so loudly that I could hear it in the big jar. It continued on like that; I don't think there was any paper money in that jar when they got it back and I saw more pennies than anything else.

Paying the bill was just really uncomfortable. People silently put money on the table and one couple took bills out of a blush envelope that had clearly been intended as a wedding present at one point.

This is obviously an extreme example of what not to do, but - for real - do not pass on the cost of your wedding to your guests. I went intending to at least put on a friendly face and fake-smile through the evening, but you can't fight the collective mood of an entire group of people who feel like they're being treated badly.

The entire evening felt gross and I wish we hadn't gone. I do wish everyone had done better at putting on a glad face for the couple, but we were so obviously their last priority that it was hard to fight against the stink of unhappiness in the room.

ETA: got to read the other half. That sounds awful! My jaw literally dropped when I read about the donation jar.

Holy shit, I must have missed your original post, but HOW does anyone think this is appropriate? Making guests pay for meals AND asking for money on top of that?

I think the change in the jar is the funniest- that's hysterical- and awful.

Tell me someone rattled the jar- so all the change slid around in it rattling.

    Ummmm Tryptophan!!!!!

Did that make you feel better? I'm sorry that happened. I remember you saying something about this before. I know you traveled a long way for that. You're a trooper I would not have gone.
