Do you wear your ring to bed?

Heather, on July 12, 2012 at 9:08 AM

I know it is a weird question but I just got engaged and I am not sure if I should be wearing my ring to bed haha. It is such a high setting that I feel like I might poke FH in the eye! And our puppy sleeps in the bed too, don't wanna hurt him LOL. I know I don't have to, but I was just wondering...

I only wear my ring when I go out. I have 2 dogs and when walking them my 70lb lab pulled and my ring got caught and a prong bent.

The only time i take mine off is if i'm cooking something that my hands will get really icky (meatloaf/meatballs, kneeding bread etc) or if i'm cleaning & using heavy duty cleaners (bleach). I get nervous if i dont have it on.

@Brittney W. - Wow! I would have freaked out! I have been taking mine off now and putting it in the box on my jewelry chest. I don't like getting it wet either! When I wash my hands I try not to wet that part of my finger lol, a little OCD I guess! Good advice from jewelers, I would hate to damage my ring in any way. And FH didn't get the warranty yet because he wanted to ask me first. He has 60 days I think, we are going in Sunday to get it!!

Only time I take it off if I am using any oil or lotion. I do wear mine everywhere- Including bed! I guess overtime that will change, but as of now, I don't want to part with it.

I don't wear mine to bed because I like to sleep on my hand ..seriously, number one reason haha. But my fingers also swell if it's warm at night & I don't like that squished feeling in the morning. Someone else mentioned they sleep with it on at hotels & I also do that or anywhere I'm at that's not my home. I don't go to the beach, swimming, or shower with it on either. We were just at a water park a couple weeks ago & some lady & a couple officers/security guard people were walking around looking/asking for that lady's ring because someone stole it out of her locker :/. So, I guess pros & cons to keeping it on!

My mom wore hers for 20yrs..never lost a stone, etc. FW always wears hers to bed and only takes it off if going to the gym or household cleaning, showers, etc. I wouldn't wait 6mos to clean it. Just stop off at a chain store and pick up some jewelry cleaner. Most will give it free. I clean FW 1x/week...just dunk it in the solution for a few minutes..then use the soft bristle that comes with the cleaner to clean in between the prongs/stone,etc to loosen the dirt. Re-dunk..and then rinse with HOT water. Don't scald yourself of course. I use a blow dryer to blow dry it all..thing ALWAYS looks brand new after. Always. Night and day after lotion, fingerprints, etc gets on it. No way would I wait 6mos in between! Experts say you can use Windex too..amnonia is what cleans it. With such diligence, no way will i not know if setting loosens Smiley winking

I guess related with all the horror stories of losing a stone,etc...(and maybe a new thread topic?)...but who has looked into jewelry insurance for their rings? Homeowners only have a fixed amount that doubtfully covers what they would cost to replace..so individual policy riders would be a better idea. Are people here insuring them?

I wear mine to bed. I only take it off if I'm kneading bread or making pie crust.

Homeowners insurance is something we always recommended as well. Jewelry store warranties don't cover things like theft or loss of the entire ring. That's extra coverage that would be provided by your homeowner's insurance. Some jewelry stores WILL replace a stolen ring, if you provide a police report AND are still making monthly payments on the stolen ring.

@Groomzilla, you ought to buy a jeweler's loupe as well!! Then you can obsessively check your FW's ring before and after you clean it, just like we always did at the jewelry store, lol! Seriously, it's a great little tool, and sets my mind at ease...

I do not wear my ring to bed, while excercising, cleaning the house, showering, or doing dishes. It's too precious to me to ruin it. Besides, I want to keep it sparkling and do not want to risk losing any of the diamonds. I don't even take it to the jewelers for a cleaning in fear of the jeweler switching out my diamonds. I clean it myself.

I'm only 2 weeks into my engagement and am still getting used to wearing a ring AT ALL TIMES! So far, I've worn it to bed, in the shower and doing dishes (he's too afraid I'll lose it). But, I've been considering taking it off at bedtime because a few nights, over the past 2 weeks, I've woken up in the middle of the night with my finger feeling like "Professor Klump"!! I guess it swells while asleep???!!! The first night it happened I almost panicked!! It doesn't happen every night and I don't want to get a bigger size because it only happens at night! Sooooo, I'm still debating on whether to continue wearing it to bed.

I also have a princess cut and have scratched myself, and FH, a few times!

@ Crystal Bleu...agreed. Homeowners has limits though..best to get a separate Jewelry Rider policy. Been there..done it before..just wondered how common it was.

Need to insure current set asap. I should buy a Loupe for sure. Smiley smile. Love seeing store jewelers faces when they want to see FWs ring and realize its 'above average' Smiley winking. It's a VVS2 that's one pinpoint from a VVS1. I spent a year educating myself on diamonds and the 4cs before I dove in on a purchase..lol

I never take my ring off unless I'm doing really dirty stuff. Like for example, this past week I have been paintin our house so it's been off.

But other than things like that, it is always on. We have had ring injuries lol but not in bed. He can't stand my diamond. He has gotten poked a few times but never in the eye.

I don't wear mine to bed only because I'm always rubbing my face in the middle of the night and I'm so afraid to cut myself so once I'm getting ready to shower it comes off and doesn't go back on my finger until I leave for work the next day

I do but I read somewhere that you shouldn't. When I take it off I never remember to put it back on until after I leave the house.

All these posts have me thinking maybe I should change my ways!

When we first got engaged I took it off at night, but then I wanted to have it on all the time. I'm notoriously clumsy and prone to losing/forgetting things, so keeping it on my finger seemed like the best bet. I remember losing my high school ring from taking it off to wash something and forgetting about it.

The jeweler never went into anything about "do not where when you're..." conditions with me/FH. Definitely reconsidering now...
