Do I need a toasting flute set and cake cutting set?

Cassandra, on June 6, 2013 at 5:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

My venue will provide glasses and stuff to cut the cake, but I have noticed that it is popular to buy personalized flutes and cake cutting sets. What do you think? Is it worth the money? Do you use them again?

Nope. My mom bought us a set without me knowing, so we used them, but she has them again and is displaying them. They were just from a large chain craft store, we toasted with water because we don't like champagne, not personalized or anything. If I'd been offered some for use by the venue, I would have used those, but my mom probably still would have bought us something.

We are not. One less thing to find a place for.

Cake cutting would be a purchase of mine because I make desserts a lot. If someone buys me flutes I would be thankful, but I can just as easily use what the venue provides

I asked a lot of people the same thing and most people said they never used them again except one person used them at a baby christening. Both sets of parents said to save our money.

Large chain craft stores sell matching sets or, if you want a vintage vibe, you could pick-up a set of glasses and a cake server from a store that is selling things for the second time.

I considered these things to be a waste of money that was better spent elsewhere.

We did have special personalized toasting flutes, however only because my mom's best friend bought them for us as a shower gift. We used the cake cutting set provided by our caterers.

It is nice to have for sentimental value, but it is a huge waste. I know I will never use the glasses again I’m getting plain cheap ones and putting a bow around it with our wedding colors. Done and Done. As far as cake cutting sets, how many cakes will you cut as a couple again? You can buy cheap ones and put I ribbon around, or just use the ones provided! If you have the money to do it, do it! If not, I would skip it.

No. Or go to a thrift store and buy two great glasses and maybe a cutter set too, but you'll never use them again and no one is even going to notice them.

I registered for some cake cutting ones but if I don't get them then I'll just buy a cheap set or use my parents. I don't particularly want to spend money on the flutes either so my mom offered to let me use hers from their wedding.

We went cheap. We got toasting glasses from walmart for 13 dollars that have a dangly heart on them and our cake cutter set from hobby lobby for 5 dollars when they had their 50 % off his & her brand sale.

I thought about getting a set, but the only time they'd be used is at the wedding (and then maybe the flutes on our anniversary), and I'd have to find somewhere to put them in my (small) house. Decided it's just as well to skip it.

If you decide to purchase them go to OrientalTrading.com. The girls told me about it yesterday and I purchased everything for $55.00, no delivery fee.

Nope. We're toasting with whatever is in hand (champagne was crazy expensive at our venue) and they provide a cake cutting set. I understand the sentimental value, but I'm not sure what I'd ever do with them again.

I would have never bought them myself, but I put both on our registry for my bridal shower and we got them as gifts.

No you don't need it. If you want it then go for it.

You do not need them, BUT there is so much about a wedding you really don't need.

I got some toasting flutes and cake set for sentimental reasons. I'll try to make it a point to use them again, they are nice.

I had to purchase our toasting glasses and didn't care for any of the designs at the party/hobby stores, so I bought engraved ones as a keepsake and something to use on New Years or our anniversary. Cake cutting set on the other hand I see as a waste of money.

I got mine toasting flutes for free from Bloomingdale's just for registering there. I have no intention of using the registry but I will use the toasting flutes.

NO...if you won't use them again, don't bother. I opted out of the cake cutting set cause I know I just tend to use a knife for birthdays. I did want flutes because I like champagne, and I wanted to reuse them for future celebrations in our home.

@FutureMrsHicks our free flutes were perfect with our theme. I even drank out of them on Monday for mimosas!

I bought both, but they match both our guestbook and cake topper. I'm getting a rather expensive cake so I figured I shouldn't just cheap out on the cake cutting set and I didn't get them engraved so they can be used at any point. Plus my mom said if I were to get rid of them she wants first dibs.
