Cash gift calculator

Cavan, on November 1, 2011 at 9:59 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 34

I found this interesting site that can determine how much money to give to a couple for their wedding. I was very surprised at how much it says I should give. I went to a wedding this weekend and I plugged in the info it required. I gave the couple $200 but the calculator said I should have given them $350. It didn't take into account the fact that the bride is a partner in a corporate law firm and her DH is a corporate accountant and they bring in at least 10 times as much as we do. But, I still think it could be useful.

Interesting. Except they don't include weddings in DC. Oops!

Holy cow - I just plugged in the info from the last wedding I went to and it said I should have gifted 350 as well. I gifted 250 plus a 100 shower gift.

Now I feel like a cheapskate!

That's so strange that they didn't have DC.

Yep, they said $350 for me too. My cousin was married 3 weeks after me. We didn't even get a card from them and I'm suppose to give them $350 ... the casserole dish from BB&B was perfect : )

According to this calculator, so far my relatives have been giant cheapskates, lol. Of course, it's not about the gift.

I'm not sure how accurate this is, though, going by state. For example, NJ in the vicinity of NYC is very expensive. South or far NW NJ, not nearly so much.

    $330?? I don't think so.

Too bad it doesn't take into account that you're also getting married just a month after the wedding you're going to be attending.... AND paying for it yourself.

Oh wow, I plugged in the info for the last wedding I attended (I was a MOH), it said I should've given $190 but the thing is, I spend close to 1k at that wedding, lol

I love this! Just had our wedding and IMO, any gift over $75 per person is EXTREMELY generous (but the calculator seems to think $200 per person, $265 per couple). We didn't have the wedding to make money!!!

    Wow...I would never give anyone $300 as a wedding gift...I wouldn't even give $200.00 {unless it were my child}

My usual amount for hubby n myself is $200. Can't afford more since we r both at an age where we r attending 6-8 wedding a year. This is a lot of $$$ n it adds up quickly. Beside that there are other costs that u can potentially incur in prep of attending a wedding---travel, clothes, etc

I looked at this, and then I thought about how some people on this forum thought the "cover your plate" rule was presumptive. For us, cover your plate costs between 1/2 and 2/3 what this calculator suggests.

Seems a little high?? I wouldn't give family that much even.....like $40 for a shower present and $60 for the wedding.

I'm just happy that people will be coming to mine, the gift is just a nice surprise. I could not fathom starting our lives together worrying about the material things and who "didn't give full present potential" pfft! Bad way to start out!

I just checked for a wedding I went to in Florida and it was almost exactly what we gave ... and I checked for our wedding (as if I were a couple of my bridesmaids) and it suggested they give around $175, which is a little high, but not the $300+ other people have gotten.

I think this website is great at least as a ballpark guess! Smiley smile

LOL - I'm gonna go punch in my wedding info - I can't believe I didn't think of that! And just so I'm not beat up - I don't expect that as a gift - I'm now just curious

Holy Batpoop Batman - I just threw in some friends and family for our wedding - and I'd be embarrassed if I received some of these gifts that are "recommended"

People averaged about 50 dollar gifts per family for ours. Of course some very close family and friends went above and beyond that the majority was around 50 bucks. And... I felt like we made out like bandits.

That is just stupid. You should give a different amount for black tie, Saturday, over 100 miles?

    Dumb.

Haha to the wedding I'm invited to this weekend (but not attending because, well, I hate the bride) it told me to give $5. Still more than I'm giving.
