I found this interesting site that can determine how much money to give to a couple for their wedding. I was very surprised at how much it says I should give. I went to a wedding this weekend and I plugged in the info it required. I gave the couple $200 but the calculator said I should have given them $350. It didn't take into account the fact that the bride is a partner in a corporate law firm and her DH is a corporate accountant and they bring in at least 10 times as much as we do. But, I still think it could be useful.

I'm thinking this place has a vested interest in getting couples to expect more money than they are likely to get, and getting guests to spend more than they had intended to.

Interesting....We were right on point of what we usually give(under the cover your plate theory). However, it is what the norm is for our culture for a first wedding. $250 for a friend $300 for a family member, even more if it is a godchild.

Something also interesting...We specifically said no gifts for our DW. I didn't even have a card box. However, we wound up getting minimally $200 per couple. We were so embarrassed. It was a DW. They had to drive to Vermont and stay for two nights. I was so glad I did the big dinner on Friday night and the welcome bags, favors, etc. None of those even justify the gifts we received.

That thing is ridiculous! Just for fun I put in that it was a casual friend and that I wasn't attending and it told me to send them $-10. Is the couple supposed to mail me 10 dollars for not attending their wedding?!?!

That calculator is dumb. People are going to give you whatever they want to give you, or not.

A wedding I went to recently there was a woman sitting at our table who bragged all night about not giving the couple anything. She kept saying how she doesn't like to spend money on other people. Turns out the bride and groom were very insulted and offended that this person would come to their wedding, drink all night and definitely have herself and nice meal and then make remarks like that.

$5?! $300?! This is ridiculous!!! I always hated math and I just don't think a formula can decide what is appropriate for me to give as a wedding gift! Sooo many other factors come into play.

Kristen, I would definitely write them a card, or drop them an email asking for your $10.

I wouldn't rely on this by any means. I personally feel it comes back very high. Also, I got nothing even CLOSE to this for my wedding- from friends OR family.
