I plan on having a cash bar for our reception....I read in an article that was rude....should I just pay for the bar....I don't really want to because it's not in my budget

I'm doing a cash bar, it's not in my budget to pay for it and the guests will be served a free meal along with soda. If they want to have alcohol they can purchase it.

Actually, in all seriousness, I feel like you could combine wines into a blend as a unity ceremony and then maybe serve a bottle of the blend at each table.

Cash bar & dry wedding are the same thing to me. Either way I don't get to drink.

Yes, it's rude. If it's not in your budget, you budgeted wrong. If you invite someone to your house, you don't charge them for the drinks in your fridge, do you?! You should cut out something else to properly host your guests.

Ladies, I've been following this all day. I just made my 2 hour commute home and we're almost at 500 and I literally started giggling.

Absolutely not! That's tacky. Your guests should expect to pay for nothing at your wedding.

Since this thread has gone in so many directions, I'm waiting on a double ringer to come in and say "I'm doing a cash bar and having a honey fund." I'd love to see the memes that would bring about!

    This is so interesting.

What are your thoughts on open bars with a tip jar?

I find it tacky, but in some venues it's mandatory.

@Tina- Sometimes venues require it because the cost of the bartender is not included in the cost of the open bar. Bartenders need money too! I'm a gracious tipper though since I worked as a bartender before. It wouldn't bother me much if that was the case at a wedding I was attending, but I made sure to check the contract with our caterer that this wasn't the case for us.

All weddings I've been to with open bar had tip jars. Idk about our venue though. Probably not as the bartender is included in open bar fees

As a host, I would take care to tip the bartender myself to avoid passing the costs onto guests. I don't carry "tip money" usually when I'm at a wedding and so I'd feel bad with the tip jar there.

I think what I'M going to do is make it SEEM like a cash bar, upsell everything, but really pay for it beforehand and so all the profits can go to anything I didn't get off my honey fund registry. FH and I DESERVE it. Smiley winking
