Cabell rhymes with Scrabble.. How didn't I know this?

*~WiiFeY~*, on October 5, 2010 at 8:52 AM Posted in Planning 0 58

My head has been pronouncing it wrong this whole time. And I've been here for 6 months now. And I even just found another post where Cabell specified that it rhymed with Scrabble.. *sigh* I feel like an old, lost, confused lady...

The only way I'd know that is because of this post. You're not alone. :-)

And to think, as a child I would get mad at my mother for using this device to tell people how to pronounce my name. :p

It's easy to miss posts around here, so don't feel bad! I'll just have to start incorporating it into all my welcomes. Pretty soon you'll be repeating it along with me, much like the people in my cohort in graduate school, after they'd heard me introduce myself for the 50th time...

I as well pronounced Cabell's name "Ka-Bell" and missed any prior posts on the correct pronunciation before last night.

It is my actual, given name. It used to be a guy's name--my grandmother had a brother named Cabell. The family started using it after they ran out of sons to carry it on, since before it was a masculine given name, it was a surname (related to Campbell, so Scottish in origin). John Cabell Breckinridge ran against Lincoln for the presidency, and then became secretary of war for the Confederacy; not exactly a proud moment in our family history (he was a cousin numerous times removed).

Interestingly, I've met two other Cabells in my life and they were both women. I think people are generally more willing to give girls "weird" names. They're both almost certainly distantly related to me, since it's a family name and it was never a big family--plus one of them is even from Virginia, where the family was concentrated. There's a Cabell County in West Virginia.

Don't feel bad, FS's given name is Horace. Its a family name. He's the 4th. And when his great great grandparents didn't think they'd have a boy, they named their daughter Hortense Edwina (the male name was Horace Edward). They ended up having a boy so the Horace Edward's kept going.. And Hortense Edwina ended up having a son and she, too, named him Horace.. Oh boy.

I understand the chagrin over using a device to explain name pronunciation.

My name is Tammie - everyone pronounces it differently than my parents. Even I do, at this point, because constantly correcting everyone (in pronunciation AND spelling) was exhausting. At one point, early in our relationship (since it started online, as I mentioned in the online dating thread), I was explaining to DH how to pronounce my name. Tammie... with the 'a' as in 'apple.' He still doesn't pronounce it that way, but he did develop the nickname "Tapple" for me.

Wait, how the hell do people pronounce "Tammie" other than with an A as in apple? o.O

Also, my friend Leanna's name is "ah" as in "awning," but she has stopped correcting people who say it with "a" as in apple because she got tired of it, too. That sucks.

I just recently learned you were Cabell / Scrabble. I'm still trying to train my brain to mentally pronounce it that way Smiley winking

My name is Lara, rhymes with Mara but I get called Lora all the time until I have to correct everyone a million times. It can get frustrating. lol. Which is why I think it has always been easier for friends and family to just call me Fins.

Fins... that's not actually helping. Is that Mara like "Mair-uh" or "Mair-ah" or "Mahr-uh" or "Mahr-ah"? :p

Ok I must admit I still say it wrong in my head Cabell :-( Sorry..I will try the scrabble trick everytime I see your name now! haha

@Tammie--I am NOT figuring yours out for the life of me. When I was in college it was weird but everyone called me "Knee See" instead of "Nick ee" if I had a name tag on. I mean cmon. Who can't say Nicci?

People constantly get my name wrong and half the time I don't even correct them anymore. Kaylia pronounced (Kay-Leah). If it's someone that I'm going to be talking to a lot I'll correct them, I don't care to be called Kay or Kayla and def not "Kuh-Leah". But it's not that big of a deal.
