Cabell rhymes with Scrabble.. How didn't I know this?

My head has been pronouncing it wrong this whole time. And I've been here for 6 months now. And I even just found another post where Cabell specified that it rhymed with Scrabble.. *sigh* I feel like an old, lost, confused lady...

I'm Shana, pronounced Shay-na. Why my mother didn't put a Y in there, I'll never know. But I've gotten Sha-na. Shan-na, Shaw-na, Shania, I even had a trainer go so far as to call me Shaniqua once.

Unique: Really, just think of the game "Scrabble," and take off the "Scr" part and put in a C, so it's like "Cabble." (I always tell service people at sandwich shops and the like that they should spell my name in whatever fashion they think is most likely to lead the person calling the order to say it right.)

digiscrappy: Yeah... I really don't get the distinction there. To me, "ham" and "apple" have the same vowel sound. But there are a lot of phonemes that are only used in some languages/dialects, so I can imagine that they might sound different to you because you've learned a finer distinction than I have.

Analy: Have you ever heard a song about a mermaid named Annalee or some variation thereof? I swear that it was my favorite when I was little, but I can't find any evidence of it online anywhere! I'd think I'd imagined it, except that my favorite doll was named Annalee after it.

I had the #1 name in 83 I think...there were always at least 4 other Jennifers in my class. When I asked my mom why she named me this.. "Because I just liked it." LOL.

Sailingnurse: No, it's an old folk song. I want to say I heard it by Peter, Paul & Mary, but I'm really not sure.

Digi is your name pronounced normally as a form of Tammy thats how I read it. Or is it Ta mee like Tamara is sounded out? Tamar I get as Ta mar since thats my cousins name. My real name is easy but has tons of spellings. Everone gets my last name wrong not my first.

I know this woman who named her daughter Rachel.. But they pronounce it like Raquell. How can you spell it one way, but pronounce it different?! It bugs me so bad. The baby is only a year or two old, but I feel so bad for her when she gets to school.

Also- With Tammie's name, you guys might just be saying it right. I know know that where I live, and probably in most southern, or "accented" regions, the A in Tammy is a weird sound. I have a cousin named Tammy.. and everyone pretty much says Tay-um-mee. Except say it really fast, because we don't actually say it in 3 syllables. And I think Tammie is saying that that instead of "tayumee" its "taaaaa(very short A)meee. hahaha I think I just confused MYSELF.

KK has it! It's taaaaa meeee (but not so short that it sounds like Tommy) but most people pronounce it like Tay-um-mee, but with the Tay-um run together so that they're pronounced as one syllable.

shdvl, my formal name is Tamara, but the parentally-bestowed informal name is Tammie. They pronounce it differently than I do - and I hear all sorts of pronunciations from the general public. My parents say Tuh-MARE-uh. I say Tam-er-uh (though I often run it together as Tam-ruh). And I've heard every pronunciation of that, including a middle school principal who pronounced it "Tuh-mar-uh" which led to people taunting me because it sounded like an improperly pronounced tomorrow... and some would sing the song from Annie. *facepalm* But I like to use Tamara for business purposes.

Most times, I just go by Tam now... which rhymes with ham... and is closest to KK's suggest "tay-um," but one syllable.

    Yes, I'm complicated. Smiley winking

Things that I heard in elementary school:

    Cowbell

    Campbell's Soup

    Kibbles 'n' Bits

    Cable TV

Really the only thing that gets me is people trying to make up shortened nicknames for me. The only people in the world allowed to call me "Cabby" are my parents.
