Bad at budgeting...oops?

Anyone else struggle with sticking to the budget? Or unaware of how much they've actually spent? FH and I were discussing the big payments we still need to make and he asked me how much we had spent/are spending after those things are marked off. When I sat down to look at everything I realized I haven't *really* included everything in the budget. For example, I bought all of the artificial flowers when they were on sale. Didn't add them to the budget. Bought an old paint ladder at the Peddler's Mall for escort card display, didn't put it on the spreadsheet. Decided I HAD to have baby tissue boxes that say "happy tears," so I bought them and...SHOCKER, never put them on the spreadsheet.

So on one hand, it looks like we're killing it with the budget lol. On the other, FH might be ready to kill me because I have a shopping problem. It's not like my shopping problem is anything new, I've been like this my entire life lol. And I did kind of offer to return the tissue boxes but also expressed 15 times how adorable they are and "babe, our wedding is going to be emotional. Our friends ALWAYS cry at weddings."

I think I've been pretty good about sticking to my budget. Well...at least the one from my parents Haha.
Theres lots of little things I've bought and I'm sure we'll (by that I mean *I*) have spent more than I intended! Haha

Haha, I love your baby tissue box idea! We didn't really set a budget in the beginning, because we just didn't know how much everything would cost. So after booking all of the big, what we considered affordable, vendors; we were finally able to lay it out on a spread sheet so we can get an idea of what we are spending. We plan to use our tax return to pay for the majority of our wedding. All of our vendors have their deposits, so once we get our tax return we can pay them off. Then we were able to look at how much money we would have left after paying them, plus the donation my mom is giving us, and saw how much we would have to put towards all of the other things: decor, gifts, jewelry/veil, flower girls, licenses and insurance, alcohol, rings, vendor tips, transportation, hotel, etc. But I will say, we have definitely gone over what we originally thought we would be spending, lol!

FH is the one who is like eh it's just a spool of ribbon who cares, you really don't need to add that to the budget/ledger pages of the wedding binder. Or who cares, I paid for the PA system, you don't need to worry about what it cost.

Uh, yeah I do. I fully want to be able to say our wedding cost $xx,xxx.xx lol. Just to be able to say later that YES we came in under budget, even if that's only by a dollar.

We're only really having a budget for the big-ticket items or things that are purchased more in bulk, but the minor or incidental expenses we're less fussed about. We both blew the budget on our wedding bands, but decided in the end it was more important to be happy with the bands we'll wear than to settle on something we weren't thrilled with. We're finding lots of other places to make cuts to compensate for it, but some things just cost more than anticipated.

We also aren't actually really tracking money that's already been spent, because....it's already been spent. We didn't have a set amount of money up front that we decided to stick to, just a ballpark figure, and are each putting as much money into a joint account as we can.

So basically, we don't have any exact figure on how much we're spending on this, but we have a pretty good estimate, and had an idea when we started that our contribution should be around a certain amount. We'll be in that neighborhood but can't really say if we're north or south of that.

To me my budget consists of anything that is really for the event itself to serve the guests. Decor is this weird inbetween for me that yes it counts but I wouldn't be mad if I spent my own "personal" money for these things, ya know. I get what you mean! I will try to always tally what I spent on such decor though. To me, my dress and new cowgirl boots and that stuff isn't in my budget for the entire wedding. I know what I want to spend for a dress, it's just that it doesn't serve my guests. The venue, food, drink, and vendors are my main focus with FH to combine our money.

We haven't gone over budget but I'm been really bad about tracking everything. At the beginning I was crazy about it - I recorded anything remotely related to the wedding and who paid for it (I even tracked the $15 I spent for the binder, pens, post its, etc). Now that we're getting closer I've stopped keeping track. I know how much we still owe and we have more than enough, but my spreadsheet is looking a little sad lol

Before we decided on any vendors I created a spreadsheet and lists all the potential charges under each categories (county license fees, bridal show, etc, are also included) for a big picture on the "Grand Total". Then on a separate tab I compare each vendor under their categories (venues, bakeries, florist) and eliminate the ones we couldn't afford. Throughout the year I also track items bought that was wedding related and remind myself stop buying when its was close to the limit (LOL). We did have items over and under spent, but I also have a column on the spreadsheet that tracks that amount so it helps to adjust remaining items. Wedding was 2 weeks ago and after punching in the final numbers, we spent 3k under!

I think I've done decently okay lol. I've done a lot better about sticking to the budget for the big things, it's just the little things I keep adding!

Thank you! The baby tissue boxes were like $5 for I think 10 boxes at Hobby Lobby. I've also seen cute little envelopes for tissues. We had more generous contributions than we thought we would from our families so now I have to remind myself that just because FFIL is handling rehearsal dinner and the bar, doesn't mean I can go spend that money haha.

I can relate! I don't want to add up all the small expenses but I also want to be able to say I spent exactly this much and saved x amount of money!

I feel like that's a much less stressful way to budget/spend for your wedding, kudos to you!

Ah, that makes sense. I hadn't thought of it that way! Décor is such a weird in-between! I've spent a bit more on some things (like milk glass) but I justify it by saying I now have a vase collection for our home.

Lol I'm glad I didn't track my $50 binder purchase...that I've opened maybe twice. FH probably wouldn't be too thrilled about that one.

Wow, 3k under? That's awesome! Your spreadsheet also sounds like a lot better tool than mine is haha. I don't know how to do any of the fancy things so I have a very elementary spreadsheet going on lol
