Backhanded compliment vent. Updated!

My mom just called me. She told me she saw my recent picture from Disneyland and told me how good she thinks I look since I lost weight. She then proceeded to tell me how bad I looked in a picture I took 2 months before at Seaworld. She told me I looked "lumpy and bumpy" in the yoga pants I was...

My mom just called me. She told me she saw my recent picture from Disneyland and told me how good she thinks I look since I lost weight. She then proceeded to tell me how bad I looked in a picture I took 2 months before at Seaworld. She told me I looked "lumpy and bumpy" in the yoga pants I was wearing, and she's glad I'm losing weight.

I wanted to yell at her, but I refrained. It was so hurtful. I think she just doesn't consider the words she's saying, but it sure seemed like a backhanded compliment. Any one else dealing with these kind of comments in the months leading up to your wedding?

Damn girl. your mom has some body issues if she is gonna say you don't look good in that pic! tell her, I don't plan on wedding in yoga pants so I'll look great. thanks for your concern. I love my body through all it's progressions!! after having a baby and nursing for 15 months, my body isn't all that spectacular but my fiancé is willing to love it! your mom can keep her thoughts about your body to herself and I would warn her that if those are things she plans on saying to you on your wedding day, she can kindly find her seat and watch your lumpy (not at all lumpy btw) butt walk up that aisle without you giving her and her poor attitude a second glance!!!

Your mom's crazy... you looked great even then!, mine does the same, even worst... 2 of my BM's and I started exercising and watching what we eat back in October (see top pic) and one of them made a collage of a pic back then, taken on my birthday and another one from past july after I gave them their BM proposal bags (see bottom pic). According to my mom "there's NO difference between the two of them, it's like you didn't do a thing"... ugh... oh... BTW she also thinks I'm still a virgin (I'm 33... and have been with FH for almost 15 years)

Thanks Ladies. I hope I got through to her by letting her know. Her mom is just so negative I think she picked it up and doesn't even realize it half the time. I don't want her to sound like a monster, because most of the time she's great.

I can 100% relate. I love my Mom, but she actually hurts my feelings quite a lot about the same situation. She has said, "It's amazing how you're not concerned about losing weight before your wedding," "You really should lose weight," and "Just remember, all eyes will be on the bride--no pressure." Really? She constantly tells me both in-person and via text of different types of exercising to do. I feel so defeated when she constantly brings this up to me (and has been even since before the engagement and planning) so I can totally relate.

You seriously look great! I wish I looked that good bahaha. Try to drown out the rude comments your mom has said about how you look.

I sense some jealousy from you mother, that picture had no "lumpy" features about it!

Wow. I'd easily tell her to fuck off.

In all seriousness, I'd tell her that it wasn't a compliment and was very hurtful. I'd also suggest that she's not welcome to comment on your body.

@Constance, oh, I told her. She quickly apologized and said sorry, and that I'm looking good now.

I so feel you in the backhanded compliment department. I talk about eating ANYTHING and my Mom comments, "Over the lips and to the hips sweetheart!" Yeah this coming from a 5'2" woman who has as much weight on her as my 5'10" frame. Oh and she has trouble walking and I run half marathons. Oh well. I swear it is a Mom's job to do this.

    Ignore it. You look great.

Rebecca, my mom is a weight watcher leader, that doesn't help haha! She also isn't in perfect shape so I think she want me to be for her.

@Future.Mrs.Fox - My Mom does it because she doesn't want me to end up like her. Well, to start, I am 8 inches taller than my Mom so I am not worried! I think our Moms are similar in this regard. I have spent most of my life on a diet because she was, and now I have learned balance is the key.
