Backhanded compliment vent. Updated!

My mom just called me. She told me she saw my recent picture from Disneyland and told me how good she thinks I look since I lost weight. She then proceeded to tell me how bad I looked in a picture I took 2 months before at Seaworld. She told me I looked "lumpy and bumpy" in the yoga pants I was...

My mom just called me. She told me she saw my recent picture from Disneyland and told me how good she thinks I look since I lost weight. She then proceeded to tell me how bad I looked in a picture I took 2 months before at Seaworld. She told me I looked "lumpy and bumpy" in the yoga pants I was wearing, and she's glad I'm losing weight.

I wanted to yell at her, but I refrained. It was so hurtful. I think she just doesn't consider the words she's saying, but it sure seemed like a backhanded compliment. Any one else dealing with these kind of comments in the months leading up to your wedding?

Now that I think about it, my mom always complained about my grandmas comments on her weight. So she is in essence just passing down the judgment...

@Future.Mrs.Fox, I hope she does. It sounds like what @Jessi says might be spot on!! Unfortunately, it is such a difficult thing to stop. I am 49 and try soooo hard not to do that with my daughter, but when you are raised that way, it is really difficult not to continue the same thing. As PP have said, just be sure to put this on your "NO WAY IN HELL" list when it comes to being a parent yourself.

I am sorry you have to deal with this, but do not let it ruin your happiness!!

I do not see one thing wrong with your "lumpy and bumpy" photo. She's crazy. I see a flawless figure, don't let her get to you.

I'm glad that you were able to tell her how you felt. I hope she gets some insight into her hurtful behavior over it. And, I agree that I see no extra lumps or bumps in that photo.

My mom is similar with weight-related comments. When I bought my wedding dress, her comment was "Well, if you keep gaining weight like you have been, it won't fit when you get it. Are you sure you don't want to order it a size bigger?" (The size I ordered has to be taken in as-is.) Thing is, I've lost 35 lbs. in the past 2 years (10 lbs. of it in the past couple months) and she mentioned me gaining weight like three times now. I'm just like "I've lost 35 lbs.! What do you mean 'keep gaining weight?'" It's beyond infuriating and hurtful to me. I am trying to lose 20 more before the wedding, so what she says to me isn't making me work harder, it just hurts.

Sorry, I've needed to vent about that for a bit, and it makes me angry/sad to hear the hurtful comments that people say about weight sometimes, no matter what size someone is.

I went for alterations saturday. When I bought my gown in May, it needed to be clamped back by about an inch or two. On Saturday, the dress was SNUG. In front of this seamstress I had never met before, my mom says "You need to stop eating so much!!" -- it was weird. It was almost as if she was so embarrassed of me that she had to be vocal about her lack of approval, just so the seamstress is aware that my mom doesnt approve. She wouldnt let up on me. I was actually embarrassed by how she was making herself look.. by ragging on her daughter. Then we get in the car and she mentions again that I need to diet. Ugh.

Are you kidding me! I'd kill to be your kind of lumpy and bumpy. Don't let your mom put that pressure on you. You're a knock out.

Woah. Not lumpy and bumpy at all, you look great!

Definitely in a similar situation though! I recently lost about 40 pounds, and my mother's comments range anywhere from "wow you look great!" "You should definitely keep going, try to lose another 20" "you're going to slip up and gain all your weight back"

Forward to the horror of my wedding dress being 2 sizes to big, being fortunate enough to exchange it for a smaller size, only to have it not zip up all the way and my mother telling me that it looks great but there is absolutely no way I'll fit into it...

    Queen of backhanded compliments...

Sounds like a lot of you have moms that say the same kind of things. Must be generational, as previous posters have pointed out. Thanks again for you all being so sweet an complimentary! I feel much better.
