About

Located in the village center of South Berwick, ME, the Stage House Inn is a stately and elegant wedding venue. The property offers 20 unique guest rooms, private function spaces, and Dufour, an on-site award-winning restaurant and bar. We are thrilled to share our historical charm and Maine-style hospitality with the community and travelers alike.

Facilities and Capacity

The Stage House Inn specializes in hosting private events. These include micro weddings (for up to 65 guests), showers, corporate events, holiday parties, baptism celebrations, funeral receptions, celebrations of life, and other events for 20-165 guests. On occasion we also have the Nealley House available for events for up to 36 guests (see pictures).

History

Since the late 1700s, the structure that now houses Stage House Inn and Dufour has served many purposes. Originally built as a private residence, it soon became a stagecoach stop where visitors would stop to eat and lodge at Frost Tavern after traveling hundreds of miles to load up on supplies at the river landing. Following that, it was Paul’s Hotel, and eventually also served as a boarding house. Then, for nearly 70 years during the 20th century, it was a convent run by the Sisters of St. Joseph Order. Dufour honors all their spirits with the many traces of history that remain here.
Joseph Dufour’s famous ‘Les Vues D’Italie’ panoramic wallpaper was initially hung in the dining room of Frost Tavern in the early 1820s. Sarah Frost, the owner of the tavern, ordered the wallpaper installation in advance of the arrival of General Lafayette, who stayed and dined here while traveling through the area on his famous Victory Tour in 1825. Sadly, the wallpaper was eventually covered over and forgotten. In 2017, during renovations, it was rediscovered under layers of sheetrock. Painstakingly restored and reinstalled, the historic block print is once again showcased in our Parlor dining room.
But Dufour’s historic design elements do not end there. After fleeing France in 1909, a small group of nuns from the Sisters of St. Joseph Order took sanctuary in this historic building, eventually opening a school for the French-Canadian children of the local immigrant mill workers. The decorative tin that once adorned St. Joseph’s convent now lines the walls and ceilings in various areas of the building. In the Bar area, fine marble countertops and tables are flanked by bronzed “chapel” arches above the bar, while repurposed church pews serve as restaurant seating. A breathtaking stained glass window created by a local artist illuminates the space, a final nod of appreciation to the nuns and this notable era of the venue’s history.

Intimate Wedding of our Dreams!

I cannot express how fantastic our experience was for our June wedding.

For starters- Darien, the event coordinator for the Stage House Inn, was a delight to work with. He couldn’t have been more responsive, nicer, more organized, and detail oriented. Our event would not have been the same without his help, and I do say our day was absolutely perfect.

We rented out the entire Stage House Inn for the night of our wedding and also the Nealley House for the weekend. We originally had wanted an outdoor ceremony, and our plan was to be married on the lawn of the Nealley House. As it is Maine, it rained! Darien offered not only one, but two rain alternate plans for our ceremony. We opted for our wedding of 60 people to take place on the veranda, which was actually magical. Private and intimate, we all fit (my biggest concern honestly.) All our guests were able to fit seated out of the weather. They were able to hear and see the ceremony without issue. Walking out the front door and around the porch for our aisle was just amazing as a bride - being able to turn the corner and see all our loved ones and my groom was something I’ll never forget! We said our “I Do’s” with the sound of rain drops on the roof and birds chirping (if road noise is a concern- don’t let it be- didn’t notice it at all, it is really quite private on the veranda.) It had not crossed my mind that was an option prior to our rehearsal the night before and I’m so glad it worked out the way that it did. (If you are thinking of choosing Stage House consider this as a fantastic option for your ceremony!!).

We had our reception in the Sarah Frost Hall, dancing in the front room, access to the bar. I again, was concerned about our 60 guest wedding party fitting and it was great. We had plenty of space, and with the entire venue it gave our guests the opportunity to spread out after dinner. Many sat in the Sarah Frost Hall or outdoors on the porch to chat and spend time together, the rest partied at the bar and on the dance floor, we honestly had plenty of space while still feeling cozy and intimate. Our guests were impressed at the quality of the food - I wasn’t surprised that it was delicious, as I’ve not had a bad meal at Dufour!

Having the Inn and the Nealley House available to have all our guests on-site was amazing. My favorite part of any wedding I have been a guest at is spending the weekend with family and friends, and our wedding was exactly that. It was a destination wedding despite us living 10 miles down the road! We had an entire weekend celebrating with our favorite people which is priceless.

I cannot speak higher of our experience having our wedding at the Stage House Inn!

Rehearsal Dinner and Welcome Party

Fabulous experience at the StageHouse Inn/Dufour Restaurant I would highly recommend!!
From the very beginning Darien was very knowledgeable, organized, thorough and focused on every detail for our dual event. The entire staff was so kind and easy to work with. The service was excellent, the food was fantastic. Incredible experience all around!

Perfect for a winter micro wedding

We had a very small (34 people) wedding reception at Dufour in the Sarah Frost hall in late December. The setting was perfect for what we were looking for. Darrien was very communicative and accommodating. Another couple also had a wedding there the night before and despite the quick turnaround, Darrien was there every step of the way, alerting my mom when the room was ready earlier than anticipated so she could decorate ahead of the ceremony. When my sister had a last minute request for a small table and bowl for some favors, he was right there. My family members with celiac disease were also appreciative of the accommodations. The servers were also very friendly, I felt like they anticipated what we wanted before we did. We also rented the Nealley House for the weekend for ourselves and immediate family, which was a great landing pad and conveniently located across the street.

Incredible Wedding Weekend at the Stage House

My husband and I got married in July 2024 at the Red Barn and our bridal/groomsman parties, parents and grandparents stayed at the Stage House Inn. We were awestruck with the personalized service, gorgeous quality of the Inn, history of the architecture and proximity to the Red Barn. Darien, the events coordinator, was so helpful throughout our process. I stayed in the bridal suite. It was immaculate! We had our rehearsal dinner at the Stage House Inn and the food was incredible (especially the Chicken Piccata!) we loved sitting out on the front porch of the Stage House after dinner and catching up with our family and friends. Memories I will always cherish!
