Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is a historic wedding venue located in Charleston, South Carolina. The property, featuring centuries-old live oak trees, is recognized as the country’s oldest public gardens. It boasts bright azaleas, wisteria, hydrangea, magnolias, and camellia, all of which bloom throughout the year. Spread across an area of almost 500 acres, the venue’s event spaces illustrate the region’s quintessential Southern charm.
Facilities and Capacity
Magnolia Plantation and Gardens has three separate wedding spaces, all with their own distinct flair. The Carriage House is an idyllic setting with both indoor and outdoor areas and can accommodate weddings of up to 200 guests on the lawn. During the summer months, the Plantation House Veranda is available for outdoor events. Ceremonies are performed on the Long White Bridge Lawn, while receptions of up to 250 are held on the back lawn of the Plantation House. Small events of 60 guests or less are ideal for weddings in the Conservatory. This space captivates couples and their guests with tranquil water features and lush greenery. The property also features private dressing rooms for the convenience of the happy couple.
This venue is an ideal choice for couples who are looking for both a beautiful and historic location. It adds a hint of Southern hospitality to each wedding held in any of its event locations. The plantation’s staff is available by private bookings to give tours of the property and help couples pick the perfect backdrop for their wedding. They are happy to refer vendors that may be chosen by the engaged couple.
The plantation was founded in 1676 by Thomas and Ann Drayton, whose descendants continue to operate the venue today. During the 19th century, the gardens expanded and began to resemble the modern-day property. John Grimké Drayton sought to beautify the site to help his new wife from Philadelphia feel at home in Charleston. He was the first to bring azaleas to America, and one of the first to cultivate Camellia Japonica in an outdoor garden.

The perfect venue for the perfect night
We had an amazing time renting the Carriage House for our recent wedding on August 3rd. Their staff was always willing to allow me to come and share the venue before hand with friends and family and let us into the gardens for free when we visited. The onsite bridal suite was perfect for my bridesmaids and I to get ready in and the grounds were the perfect backdrop for our big day! Everyone was in awe of our venue and how beautiful it all came together!Sent on 08/05/2019
