HISTORY of MILL NO. 1 and its FUTURE with HERON RM.
Located in the heart of Mill No. 1, one of Baltimore’s most historic buildings, Heron Room is a unique new venue that pays tribute to its industrial heritage with its cast-iron columns, vaulted brick ceilings, foundation stones, and hand selected rough sawn pine blanks that complement the original 19th century details.
Mill No.1 enjoys an important part of history along the Jones Falls, starting as a cotton mill in 1847 and in 1973 becoming the home of Life Like Products. The Mount Vernon Company, which operated several mills in the Jones Falls Valley, became the world’s largest producer of cotton duck in the late 19th century, supplying cotton for sails, uniforms, tents and parachutes for the army. The collection of buildings, listed on the National Register for Historic Places, dates from 1845 to 1918.
Terra Nova Ventures acquired the property that contains No. 1, and two ancillary buildings know as Picker Building and Store House. The developers have converted the complex into 90 apartments and 42,000 sq. ft. of commercial space.
The once boiler room, and now wood fired-brick oven inside the original smoke stack, Cosima, highlights the fresh Mediterranean cuisine of Sicily and captures the authentic essence of traditional Southern Italian flavors through its menu and unique cocktails. Sharing the beautiful cobblestone courtyard, Cosima, has been recognized as one of Baltimore's best new restaurants and one of the four preferred caterers at Heron RM.
Now becoming somewhat of an event destination, the complex invites guests to explore an experience like no other in the area. From the moment you enter the one-way path, follow its bend and enter the cobblestone courtyard, you’re suddenly in another land, a love story unfolding in an old village.
Cascading falls, and steep rock formations; a wooded view of nature can be seen from our courtyard and steel bridge, where a grand view of clustered red brick and stone restored buildings can be seen panoramically.
At the Picker Building, and event space, Heron RM. enjoy cocktails and yummy hors d’ oeuvres on the outdoor terrace and front railed deck overlooking The Yellow-crowned Night Heron, who is often perched on a rock above the bubbling waters of the falls. Inside, you’ll dine, dance, live, laugh and maybe fall in love.
Heron RM. is the kind of space that evokes creativity and thinking outside the box. It’s location in the historic “town square” we just described will be thoughtfully prepared and customized to your event.

What a fun planning visit
We recently booked with Heron Room and wanted to share how easy, fun & helpful Ethan was during this process. He offered so much information and creativity during our time together and even met with us 3 times with no problem at all. We are very excited to be working with him and the beautiful Heron Room.

Poor customer service
Upon initial research, the place itself looked like it would be a great fit for our wedding. However, their customer service was terribly unprofessional. We made several attempts to reach out and heard nothing for weeks, despite following up multiple times. When we finally were able to reach someone, there was a lot of trouble coordinating a date and time based on their (lack of) availability to show us the place and their difficulty handling Google calendar invites. We eventually scheduled a date and time to visit, but when we arrived we were stood up for the appointment and received no response when trying to contact them. 1/10 would not work with again. If they can't even manage a tour of the venue, our confidence is incredibly low that they would be able to handle managing our wedding. Very disappointed, since the space seemed like it could have been perfect for us. We will have to have our wedding elsewhere. What a shame.Sent on 02/11/2019
