Food and drink are a major part of the wedding experience (no one wants hangry guests!), so it’s no surprise that you’ll spend a big amount of your total budget on your wedding catering. The average wedding catering cost in the U.S. is about $4,000 with most couples spending between $1,800 to $7,000. Note that wedding catering prices do vary widely depending on your wedding’s location and many other factors, like guest count—but no matter where you’re getting married, delicious and plentiful food is essential to an amazing wedding reception experience.

What is included in a wedding catering package?

Your wedding catering may be provided by your wedding venue, or you may want or need to hire an outside caterer. Reading a wedding catering contract can be a bit confusing, but in general, your wedding catering cost will be priced on a “per person” basis. A standard wedding catering package includes the following:
  • Food: The wedding food cost is the most obvious part of a wedding catering package. You’re paying for the actual food that your guests will eat during cocktail hour and the main meal. Whether it’s served plated or buffet style is up to you and your caterer.
  • Beverages: Your caterer will likely provide beverages, both alcoholic and not, for your big day.
  • Staffing: From your event manager to cooks, servers, bartenders, and more, there are lots of staffers that will go into making your wedding day a success. It’s important to work with your caterer to make sure that you have enough people on hand to ensure a smooth reception.
  • Rentals: Your caterer may also provide rentals, from tables to chairs, dishes to glassware, utensils, and more. Some venues provide these rentals, or you may need to hire a separate rentals company.
  • Additional fees: Caterers may charge additional costs and fees, including cake cutting fees, corkage fees, and more. Be sure to read your contract carefully—and ask questions—to make sure you understand your wedding catering cost.

What are the different ways to serve wedding reception food?

When determining your wedding food cost, a big factor will be how you’re planning on serving the meal. There are a few serving style options for weddings:
  • Plated: Otherwise known as a sit-down meal, your guests will be served their meal at their table by a member of the wait staff. There may be a single entrée option served or several entrée options, which your guests can either order in advance (usually on their RSVP card) or at the event. This is the most formal and traditional of wedding serving styles.
  • Buffet: For a more casual serving style, guests serve themselves from a buffet station. Fifty percent of couples choose a buffet-style reception.

I attended a wedding this December catered by Oberlin and i can't say enough good things about them, me and my husband are an older couple and the gentleman in charge made sure we would not stand up for food or beverages which was greatly appreciated, the food was second to none and we were delighted with their Hors' d oeuvres. If you’re planning a wedding in Fort Lauderdale and wondering whether an ice cream cart is too much… allow me to save you the suspense: it’s not. In fact, booking the Kilwins ice cream cart for our 250-person reception was easily one of the most brilliant (and delicious) decisions we made—right up there with saying “I do.” From the moment the cart rolled in, it was like a celebrity had arrived. Guests who had been casually sipping cocktails suddenly transformed into highly motivated dessert enthusiasts. I’m talking full-on “drop everything and get in line” energy. Forget the dance floor—there was a mint chocolate chip migration happening. The Kilwins team was phenomenal: friendly, fast, and somehow able to keep up with a crowd that collectively decided they absolutely needed scoops NOW! They served with the kind of joy that makes you wonder if they knew they were basically running the emotional centerpiece of the evening. And the ice cream? Unreal. Creamy, rich, and dangerously good. People who claimed they were “too full” somehow found the strength to go back for seconds (and thirds… I saw you, Uncle Bob). At one point, I’m pretty sure I witnessed a bridesmaid negotiating a bite trade like it was the stock market. The cart itself added such a fun, nostalgic charm—like a little slice of seaside magic right in the middle of our reception. It turned dessert into an experience, not just a course. Weeks later, guests are still talking about it. Not the flowers. Not the seating chart. The ice cream. So yes, if you’re on the fence: get the Kilwins cart. Your wedding will be remembered as elegant, joyful, and—most importantly—extremely well-fed. 10/10. Would absolutely get married again just for the ice cream.

The Asado Authority made our wedding trully unforgetable. The food was outstanding, our guest loved the asado and chimichurri, and the team was professional, warm, and attentive. Highly reccommended!

Our experience with culinary affairs was exceptional. Johanna and her crew went above and beyond catering our wedding. During our food tasting we had so much to choose from and everything was delicious. They were meticulous and organized so there wouldn’t be any mistakes on our big day. Johanna was easy to get in touch with and very accommodating to our needs. On the day of our wedding everything was just how we wanted it. The wait staff was super friendly and helpful. They even helped load our car with leftovers at the end. All of our guests couldn’t stop talking about how delicious the food was. One of the ways they went above and beyond was helping setup some of our decorations. The other was they made sure we had a few bites of the appetizers during our photo session. We were starving and that was so nice of them. We plan to use Culinary Affairs for all of our events that need catering. We highly recommend them and can’t think of any negative experiences with them.
