Amber Marlow Photography
We selected Amber very late in the wedding planning process for our November 2019 wedding. Amber's photos really captured the spirit and delight of our wedding!
A good friend of my fiancé’s (now wife) had used Amber for her own wedding some years earlier and had enjoyed her work greatly. Negotiating with Amber for our wedding package made a few things very clear right away. First, Amber's pricing is higher than other photographers we considered, in some cases dramatically so. However, Amber brings an uncompromising artistic integrity to the process and a guarded protectiveness to her creativity that really sets her apart from other photographers. Her approach to the color/composition/design of her shots really is different from the "run of the mill" and that's very exciting to work with and worth the cost.
There are two types of wedding photos: the expected, rote shots that are "must haves" and the unexpected, candid pictures that make photo-sets truly special. Where Amber's work really shines, and where the pictures become exceptional, are the candid photos. The photos of the two of us as a couple are simply stunning in a way that frankly I didn't realize either of us could look. There are several photos which are almost unreal in the way Amber captured the wedding venue, the two of us and the sky together. While the posed photos of our guests are expected and well done, the candid shots of our guests on the dance floor are just remarkable. As one guest put it "I've never seen such an expression of the joy of dancing." Our Ketubah signing photos are shot very dark and dramatically, almost sacred in atmosphere. Really special work. One of our favorite memories of the wedding is actually receiving the first "preview" candid days after the wedding and instantly and vividly reliving the whole experience!
Nearly all of our "expected" shots were handled well: the in-focus shot of the rings with a blurry background, the staged "first look," etc. Everything looks great, although there were a few missed shots along the way. I put an extraordinary amount of time into creating a multi-dish vegetarian menu with the catering team and would have really liked pictures of all of the food rather than just highlights. While we have really nice shots of our first dance, it would have been better if we coordinated exactly where we would all be in relation to each other to capture every dip and twirl perfectly. And while we have some nice photos of our uncut cake, during the cake cutting the cake itself was turned away from the decorated front side. These are relatively minor nits in an otherwise very excellent photo-set.
In retrospect, even at a relatively small 125 person wedding we likely should have gone with a second photographer as well just to ensure that all of the “expected” shots came out as expected. But overall we are very pleased we chose Amber to capture our special day.
