Marriage Licenses

My FH and I are getting married in my home state of NJ, but we currently reside and will continue to reside in PA. Does anyone know how/who to contact and where to obtain the marriage license- is it the state you are getting married in and then it has to be transferred to your state of residence?! Was anyone else in the same situation?

I believe you must apply for your license in the state in which your ceremony will take place, i.e. NJ. Here in PA you can apply at any courthouse but there is a 3 day wait. Some counties will give you the license to take with you others may have you come back in 3 days to pick it up. But you can use the license anywhere in PA. Different states have different regulations and wait times. Call any courthouse in NJ and ask to speak with someone regarding their local practices.

Yeah it is the state you are getting married in. We are getting married out of state also. Best to contact the court house of the county you are getting married in.

Generally it's the state that the ceremony is taking place in. I would call the county courthouse where the ceremony is taking place to make sure that is where you get it. Also find out if there is a wait time and how long you can have the license before it will expire. (Some states give you a certain amount of days to get married once you get the license.)

And while it isn't usually a big requirement nowadays, SOME places still require blood tests. Ask about that as well.

It is the state that you are getting married. Some states have a different waiting period, a week, three days or a month. It is best to check out what the states requirements are, in order to see that you are applying for, and getting your license within the window of time, that the state specifies.
Also, doen't froget to have your witnesses and officiants sign it after the ceremony so it becoems a legal document.

NJ doesn't require blood tests any more! You have to obtain the license from the town you will be getting married in. You don't have to transfer it afterwards, it carries over from state to state. The waiting period for NJ is 72 hrs. and you can get it up to 6 months before the wedding. The fee is $28.

Not only the state, but if you both reside out-of-state and will continue to do so, you will probably have to get it in the county of the wedding (that's our Michigan law). Call the county clerk office of the NJ county you plan to wed at or visit their website for details. The rulings vary widely as do the rulings for who can marry you in different states. Some states have to have the person marrying you not only ordained, but licensed by their state/county.
